ABC News reports that the New Orleans justice system remains in a state of decay more than a year after Hurricane Katrina. People are waiting in jails without charges, and even those who want to plead guilty have no way to see a judge.
According to a Justice Department report "for the 'vast majority,' primarily the poor, justice is simply 'unavailable,'" writes ABC News.
Brian Privor, a corporate attorney living in New Orleans, is quoted saying, "When you are locking people away without caring whether they're getting the most basic level of justice, you are not only un-American, it's inhumane."
Unfortunately, according to ABC News, there is very little money available for the languishing justice system in New Orleans.
