Why was shot soldier in Iraq, asks grandfather
Last Updated: 2:30am GMT 02/03/2007

A man whose 21-year-old grandson died after being shot on an Army patrol in Iraq yesterday attacked Britain's presence in the country.

Rifleman Daniel Coffey

David Godfrey, 61, said: "It is a struggle to comprehend what our troops are doing in Iraq at all." Mr Godfrey's grandson, Rifleman Daniel Lee Coffey, was protecting fellow soldiers from an ambush when he was killed, the Ministry of Defence said.

The death of the soldier, from Cullompton, Devon, has hit his father, Nigel, 40, a machine tool operator, and his stepmother, Samantha, 33, "very, very hard," said Mr Godfrey, also from Cullompton. "He was a very patriotic lad," said Mr Godfrey, adding that Rifleman Coffey's six brothers and stepbrothers, aged from three to 17, were "devastated" by his loss.

"I don't think we are serving any useful purpose in Iraq. Whatever our motives, we have produced an atrocity. We are doing immeasurable harm to the Iraqis and immeasurable harm to our own people and families. Mr Blair has not been listening to his heart and that must change."
