Students and Alumni of Pat Robertson's Madrassa are upset that Mitt Romney is coming to visit
Some Regent University students and alumni are upset that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney will speak at commencement, saying his Mormon faith clashes with the evangelical Christianity of the school founded by Pat Robertson.

"What we're against is the fact that Mormonism is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum from Christian values and what we believe," said Doug Dowdey, a Virginia Beach pastor who said he graduated from Regent's divinity school last year.

"If Pat wants to hold a political rally, well, hold one. Why not? Just don't hold it at commencement," Dowdey said.

2. I'm sure not an expert on Mormonism, but I think this nithead is
thinking of the Mormon beliefs of many many years ago. I bet ifhe was asked about Mormon beliefs, he'd say "multiple wives" and that custom disappeared from the Mormon religion YEARS AGO. I think if he did a bit more research, he'd find many practices in Christianity that were just as crazy and objectionable.

HOWEVER...I can't say that I'm real disappointed that this group is rejecting Mittens. It will save the Dems time and money having to do the same thing!

11. It's not the former polygamy thing that fundies hate.
Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 12:01 PM by kestrel91316
It's how Mormon doctrine TODAY says good Mormons will all get to be Gods on their own individual planets some day. Complete with wife/wives, children, etc at their presumed beck and call.

Fundies REALLY REALLY REALLY don't like that part.

That, and the hands-in-the-air Jesus Weeping(TM) and wailing and loud public prayer and overall theatrical performance-like nature of services is sadly lacking in Mormon churches. If you don't do all that, you're NOT a True Christian(TM) according to the fundies.

18. Not only that - but if you are a REALLY good Mormon you get your own Universe
and apparently Jehovah (who rules *this* Universe) was once a really good Mormon. Has a lot in common with Scientology. It's kind of cool in a sci-fi fantasy sort of way.

20. No, it's about the Book of Mormon.
According to the book, "Why I Am a Nazarene," practically required reading when I was growing up, the real reason most evangelicals and fundies are against the Mormon faith is the Book of Mormon. They added another entire book to the Bible, which no evangelical would be okay with. That, and their stance of Jesus being not the Son of God but just one of them, the one for our planet. If you look into actual Mormon beliefs, they're very, very different from evangelical or fundamentalist Christianity.

9. It is a cult
by definition. Their core beliefs are too far outside either protestant or catholic christianity. They have an entirely new religous text that has nothing in common with the other churhces.

The problem is the negative connotation that the word cult has.

And the multiple wives thing is not what makes them a cult.

13. If Pat wants to hold a political rally, well hold one.
Why not?

I'll tell you why, Mr. Dowdey. Because it's a RELIGIOUS organization. If Pat wants to run a political organization, then he should be required to file his taxes accordingly. :argh:

15. My denomination of an ancient, irrelevant religion is better
than your denomination of an ancient, irrelevant religion.

I'm an atheist now, but I used to be Seventh Day Adventist. We're the ones who go to church on Saturdays. A lot of people in our denomination believe if you go to church on Sundays, you're going to hell.

16. Remember Emo Phillips?
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said "Stop! don't do it!" "Why shouldn't I?" he said. I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!" He said, "Like what?" I said, "Well...are you religious or atheist?" He said, "Religious." I said, "Me too! Are you christian or buddhist?" He said, "Christian." I said, "Me too! Are you catholic or protestant?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me too! Are you episcopalian or baptist?" He said, "Baptist!" I said,"Wow! Me too! Are you baptist church of god or baptist church of the lord?" He said, "Baptist church of god!" I said, "Me too! Are you original baptist church of god, or are you reformed baptist church of god?" He said,"Reformed Baptist church of god!" I said, "Me too! Are you reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1879, or reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915?" He said, "Reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915!" I said, "Die, heretic scum", and pushed him off. -- Emo Phillips

21. Still one of my favorite jokes.
:D

I wish I'd had that in my Christian Beliefs class in college. Even the religion majors would have laughed at that one when we were studying all the different Protestant denominations of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
