The Worst Shelter in Michigan
Written by: Justine DePalma
Published May 2, 2008

One Michigan animal “shelter” does not need volunteers. Services such as petfinder.com to increase adoptions are useless at this shelter. City of River Rouge runs a no frills animal “shelter”. The rules are simple, if a stray dog or cat enters the River Rouge shelter, he/she will die at the end of the stray time. There are no reprieves. The sweetest poodles, the most stunning purebred Afghan, the great family mutt all have the same fate when they enter that building, death by gassing. Animals entering the River Rouge shelter have drawn the worst shelter in the state of Michigan. It is the only shelter that killed every single animal unlucky enough to enter its doors.

4. thank you.
I have two rescue dogs and a rescue kitty - I can't imagine how the pet owners fear the "dog catcher" in their town.

8. River Rouge is very poor
they can barely afford a police and fire department, and rely on backup from Detroit frequently.

The Michigan Humane Society runs a great shelter in Detroit, and the ASPCA has a good one just north of Hamtramck. Surely there is a way the city of RR can work with one of those agencies to assist them.

The MHS does euthanize animals they can't get adopted, but I adopted Katie there and they took excellent care of her. The ASPCA doesn't euthanize unless the animal is sick or too vicious to tame.

9. I just started doing dog rescue two months ago
and most of the shelters in the south are like this. In one county of 300,000 people last year, they euthanized 15,000 healthy young dogs. Sickening that this goes on in our country when it is affordable to spay/neuter at clinics nowadays. Just pure, disgusting willful ignorance. And almost everyone involved in rescue in the south is from the north. I am losing my faith in human beings. :(
