Pentagon tries to block testimony by Walter Reed chief.
Pentagon tries to block testimony by Walter Reed chief.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) “is challenging the Pentagon, which is attempting to block the former chief of Walter Reed Army Medical Center from testifying before Congress next week.” Waxman wants to ask Maj. Gen. George Weightman about a contract to manage the medical center awarded to a company that had documented troubles fulfilling a contract to aid Hurricane Katrina victims. Waxman’s staff has confirmed the congressman has issued his first subpoena to legally compel Weightman’s testimony.

The Pentagon has refused to allow Weightman to testify. Waxman's staff has confirmed the congressman has issued his first subpoena as a committee chairman this session to legally compel Weightman's testimony.

According to a letter from Waxman to Weightman posted today on the committee's Web site, the chairman believes the Walter Reed contract may have pushed dozens of health care workers to leave jobs at the troubled medical center, which he says in turn threatened the quality of care for hundreds of military personnel receiving treatment there.

Weightman had been slated to testify before Congress on Monday. The Army has tried to withdraw him from the hearing. Waxman's office confirmed the congressman plans to force the officer to appear by issuing a subpoena for his testimony.

4. Where there is smoke, there is fire
If the Army is so intent on keeping Weightman from testifying it is because they have something to hide. They must know that there is much amiss and Weightman is just the beginning of the torrent of disclosures and discoveries.

5. so the bs and the lies and coverups continue. HOW much money are we giving to the Pentagon each
year? maybe it is time that the committee seriously reviewed their budget. better yet, let ME take a look at it, see that the money gets spent properly.

(eons ago, a friend said that the easiest way to balance the budget was to hand it over to a dozen women who lived on $10,000 year with a family of 5. would be balanced in NO time.

12. There ya go... your friend is exactly right.
I'll have at that budget... I qualify under your friends terms and I'd LOVE to straighten the whole thing out by "next" pay period (just cuz that's how it's done).

7. I don't know whether Gen. George Weightman is a villian or a
fall-guy for the Bush Crime Family. If the latter, which I suspect since the Army doesn't want him to testify, then this will give him a chance to defend himself.

9. The Pentagon is falling apart.
Not only are the generals of the Pentagon unable to cover for the insanity of Bushco, they cannot even lie well enough to skip out on their own individual responsibilities.

Have at it, Hank! Clean the effing house! I am sure that damn near any nineteen-year-old would at least have the moral and ethical standards to deal with the entire mess with more integrity than any current member of the JCS.

If you think Congress and the Senate have let you down, folks, think about the craven, obsequious acquiescence of our vaunted military to the machinations of this criminally insane bunch of freaks who are STILL running the show in Washington D.C.

Christ on a bloody Pogo Stick!

17. No, they disassembled it. Just like this damn administration
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 11:56 AM by notadmblnd
has done or tried to do with every policy issue they've had the opportunity to put their cronies in charge of. First they appoint their cronies to the various offices to get the feel of the inner workings of the department. After that, official quits government position and takes up high paying position within company, then they contract it out to well connected war profiting corporate buddies. Then they fire all the expensive government employees and turn the work over to a bunch of low paid in experienced idiots who provide substandard service. Heads of companies suck out all the profits and fill their pockets leaving Mr and Ms taxpayer holding the bag of shit that's left. Process starts all over again when they've determined the next government organization to suck dry. The way I see it.. it is just SOP for the BFEE.

15. Let's see them try and put the National Security curtain over this
Is this the Katrinatization of America? Bushco has well and truly screwed this country over. We're going to need a truth and reconciliation commission and a lot of orange jumpsuits to make it right again.

16. I suspect we are in the beginning of a Constitutional Crisis
When Cheney steps in and says the General will not testify even though a subpoena has been issued, what are they going to do? The Law and the Constitution are on the side of Congress but when has that stopped this Criminal Administration. If it goes in front of the Scalia court is there any doubt how they will rule? If Democrats' subpoenas are ignored then Congress is null and void and we are in a Dictatorship...We are on the very verge.....
