Percentage of female lawmakers by state

Percentage of female lawmakers by state
After a steady rise in the number of women in state Legislatures that began in the 1970s, the percentage has settled in at between 22 percent and 24 percent for the past nine years.

Here is a state-by-state breakdown for 2007:

U.S.: 23.5 percent

Alabama: 12.9 percent

Alaska: 21.7 percent

Arizona: 34.4 percent

Arkansas: 20.7 percent

California: 28.3 percent

Colorado: 35 percent

Connecticut: 28.3 percent

Delaware: 30.6 percent

Florida: 23.8 percent

Georgia: 19.5 percent

Hawaii: 32.9 percent

Idaho: 22.9 percent

Illinois: 27.7 percent

Iowa: 22.7 percent

Indiana: 18.7 percent

Kansas: 29.1 percent

Kentucky: 12.3 percent

Louisiana: 17.4 percent

Maine: 30.6 percent

Massachusetts: 24.5 percent

Maryland: 33 percent

Michigan: 19.6 percent

Minnesota: 34.8 percent

Mississippi: 13.8 percent

Missouri: 19.3 percent

Montana: 25.3 percent

Nebraska: 18.4 percent

Nevada: 30.2 percent

New Hampshire: 36.1 percent

New Jersey: 19.2 percent

New Mexico: 30.4 percent

New York: 23.6 percent

North Carolina: 25.9 percent

North Dakota: 17.7 percent

Ohio: 17.4 percent

Oklahoma: 12.8 percent

Oregon: 31.1 percent

Pennsylvania: 14.6 percent

Rhode Island: 19.5 percent

South Carolina: 8.8 percent

South Dakota: 17.1 percent

Tennessee: 15.9 percent

Texas: 19.9 percent

Utah: 17.3 percent

Vermont: 37.2 percent

Virginia: 17.1 percent

Washington: 32.7 percent

West Virginia: 14.2 percent

2. I knew my home state (New Mexico) would be among the highest.
Not bad, comparatively! Of course the state in which I currently live (Oklahoma) sucks, but that's representative of just about everything Oklahoma politics. x(

3. yeah, MINNESOTA, but we need to do better..
not one state at the same percentage as women are in the population.

4. In the UK, about 20% of MPs are women
It differs enormously by party, however. 27% of Labour MPs are women, but only 9% of Tory MPs are. Is there a similar gender difference between Democrats and Republicans?
