How can one advocate ignoring Coulter, Malkin, etc.
when every misstep, unfortunate utterance, etc. on the Democratic side make world-wide news and headlines?

Why can't the Democratic side, instead of "ignoring" these crazy bitches, demand that the press give their side the same scrutiny?

4. Ann is the face, heart, and soul of today's Republican / Conservative / Chritianist movement.
Not a pretty sight on any level of her being.

A pathetic, emotionally stunted woman who really ought to start acting her age.

6. What if our side declared them as representing the repub view?
Just get out there and make it known that these people are speaking for all republicans. Then their side will have to agree or shun these people depending on how they want to be viewed. Put the republicans on the defense of these people. See how long they are around.

But we have the Internet! Still we have a major disadvantage here.

8. Exactly. thank you. only problem is....
that's the way it is!

they WON'T ever do it. that's why creeps like her, Limbaugh, Boortz, Gallagher, Beck, etal keep their jobs, despite the unbelievably vile, mendacious comments they keep spewing.

contrast that with what the Edwards bloggers said. How long did it take them to lose their jobs?

the contrast is striking, as well as FRIGHTENING.

the right controls the media, and examples like Coulter vs. Edwards/Edwards bloggers couldn't be a better example of why we're rushing headlong into a new form of corporate fascism, with the concentrated corporate media being the chief enabler of those with all the money and power.

did you see the Glenn Greenwald blog on the Tony Snow/WH correspondents' love fest on CSPAN last week?

10. here's the greenwald link
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 10:49 PM by Gabi Hayes
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2007/02/21/wolffe/index.html

Special attention is warranted for the remarks last night of Newsweek's so-called "Senior White House Correspondent," Richard Wolffe. After Snow asserted that when you "open" a blog, "this wonderful, imaginative hateful stuff [] comes flying out" and that therefore "you probably shouldn't believe your opposition's blogs," he turned to Wolffe and asked: "what do you think, Richard?" Wolffe instinctively replied to Snow: "I totally agree."

Wolffe then proceeded to expound on Snow's attacks on bloggers by complaining that blogs are engaged in a "witch hunt" against the poor, besieged White House correspondents, which is terribly unfair because -- and, honestly, this is really an actual quote from Wolffe: "the press here does a fantastic job of adhering to journalistic standards and covering politics in general." Wolffe then adopted his most sneering and patronizing tone to observe with bewilderment that there are actually these "blogs duly devoted to media criticisms, which is itself kind of interesting given all the things you could comment on."

That is such a great point. Really, what kind of warped and obsessive American would devote themselves to such an unnecessary task as "media criticism," as though our elite national journalists -- who are doing such "a fantastic job of adhering to journalistic standards and covering politics in general" -- need anyone, let alone bloggers, telling them how to do their job.

Besides, Wolffe patiently explained that bloggers who are criticizing journalists have no understanding of the real function of journalism, just as the NYT's Michael Gordon lectured Democracy Now's Amy Goodman when Goodman had the audacity to criticize Gordon's pre-Iraq War "reporting" on Iraq's aluminum tubes. Gordon sniped: "I don't know if you understand how journalism works." Wolffe similarly enlightened the confused, misguided critics of journalists as follows:

They want us to play a role that isn't really our role. Our role is to ask questions and get information. It's not a chance for the opposition to take on the government and grill them to a point where they throw their hands up and surrender.

9. responses one and two are bullshit excuses
Edited on Sat Mar-03-07 10:47 PM by CatWoman
I don't care who "owns" the news.

that's not an excuse.

That does not get in the way of the effort being made to DEMAND that the press hold these crazy witches accountable for their words.

on edit: this was written when there were only three responses to this thread.

11. you didn't see mine, then, yes? Haven't we been demanding this
very thing, at least since the Gore/Bush fiasco? the response has always been that the media are LIBERAL/get over it/quit crying, basically.

I agree that something has to be done, but what?

rolling back the Great Communications Giveaway of 1996 would be a start......

and you are correct.

I don't know "what" exactly can be done, but ignoring these crazy bitches and not demanding them being held accountable for their slurs, IMHO, is not the way to go.

18. I know they need to be dealt with, but it's a Catch 22. M$M gives them their
forum, especially when they're at their most outrageous: the Coulter thing this week, and Howard Kurtz's treatment of Malkin are just two examples of how the media just plays into their hands, while feigning outrage at the slightest dem/progressive outburts.

Greenwald deals eloquently with this idea in the link.

12. Perhaps it is up to us to EXPOSE them in LTTEs and stress that
they are speaking for the republic party when they spew, orally or written, their venom.

I remember a conversation that I had with my mother a few years ago and she stated that Annthrax was a "strong republican". I couldn't believe it!!! So I mentioned some of the vile statements Annthrax had made, and my mother changed her tune rather quickly. As I discovered, my mother had only seen her on Larry King and another program when Annthrax would've been on her better behavior.

Just my .02.

24. I've been working through a letter in my head today, and I'm gonna have
to find a transcript of her spewings because I think that I heard her say in an audio clip, 'our blacks are better than their blacks', her ownership wording just blew my mind! She's vile on so many levels. And she was saying all of this shit knowing that c-span was covering the event.

I seem to remember a time when the insane weren't allowed on the airwaves! :hi:

that if Cheney were dead (they were talking about the bomb in Afghan), less people around the world be be dead, as well.

the wingnuts are OUTRAGED! OUTraged, I tell you, and the link provided is already mischaracterizing what he said.

it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Before thinking that the Coulters and Malkins of the world are Evil Personified, realize that there are tens of millions of people who share a like mind with her.

Look around you. It's your American Neighbor who is the enemy of justice and liberty and equality.

These cretins are merely their mouthpieces.

28. I agree with you, today.
Yesterday I said, don't give this character the attention she seeks through provocation.

Now I think otherwise - it needs to be called out. We need to restore the rules of civilization. Over and over, what this woman is really saying is, kill the liberals, kill the traitors, kill the non-conformists, kill, massacre, kill, they are not human, they are evil. It doesn't matter whether she's only doing it for attention. It gets applause. It lowers the threshold. It acts as a lubricant.

29. demand Republican candidates and officials condemn her
that's what we need to do. make it about Mitt Romney who she endorsed and demand he condemn her. same to McCain and Ghouliani.

in Ghouliani's case the same goes for when she attacked the 9/11 widows as he is a 9/11 campaign whore.
