Sunday Talk Show Tip Sheet

By: David Mark
March 3, 2007 04:10 PM EST

Iraq, immigration and the financial security of Sen. Charles Schumer’s fictional Long Island couple will be likely fodder for the Sunday morning talk shows.

On NBC’s "Meet the Press," Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.), a harsh critic of President Bush’s Iraq troop “surge” policy, will spar with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who supports the president’s plan to deploy an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq as the only way to stabilize the country.

Murtha, a consigliore to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), has become a hero to anti-war Democrats since his November 2005 call to redeploy U.S. troops from Iraq as quickly as possible. And as chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, he holds considerable powers of the purse over military operations. Yet, his plan to tie funding for new deployments to Iraq to force readiness is not settling well among Republicans – and some moderate Democrats.

Democrats and Republicans will no doubt be in head-nodding agreement over one Iraq-related issue on all of the Sunday shows: Inferior conditions for wounded soldiers at Washington’s Walter Reed Medical Center. Reports about rat-infested quarters and other startling environs provide an opening for even the most stridently anti-war Democrats to suggest they strongly support the troops, if not their mission.

This guy is a fucker. Democrats support the troops while rethugs just talk about it.
