Cool,CNN's Soledad O'Brien receives the NAACP honorary award for journalism.
Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 10:24 AM by Swede
“There is a lot of diversity in reporting but Soledad often represents those who are not represented and gives them a voice,” Gordon added. “When she reports the news, she reports all of it. She tells the stories that need to be told and asks the hard questions that need to be asked and follows up often when others have moved on.”

“We are delighted to recognize Soledad O’Brien and her achievements with this honor," said Gordon. "She is being recognized for her humanitarian efforts and journalistic excellence. She is also an intelligent, highly educated, powerful role model for all young women. She has been an inspiration to her viewers and colleagues through her welcoming smile, genuine concern for people and her consummate professionalism.”

O’Brien graduated from Harvard University with a degree in English and American literature. She has been awarded honorary doctorates by Sienna College and Mercy College. She is active in the community by engaging in endeavors that focus on young people.

1. Was This A Stenography Award?
I can think of a lot of intrepid black journalists who are far more deserving than this vacuous bobble-head. She's a corporate enabler, not a journalist. Shame on the NAACP.

19. CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, Spike Lee Give Voice to Young Katrina Survivors
Through the eyes of young Hurricane Katrina survivors, CNN’s American Morning reveals the trials and triumphs of growing up in the aftermath of a catastrophe. The special series “Children of the Storm” debuts on Friday, Feb. 9, and will air regularly leading up to the hurricane’s second anniversary in August.

For the series, CNN’s Soledad O’Brien and director Spike Lee traveled to New Orleans to distribute mini-camcorders to 11 New Orleans-area students, giving them the tools, encouragement and a venue to share their voices and visions with the world. “Children of the Storm” will show how the storm affected their lives and their dreams, their thoughts about the city’s recovery and their own future in their devastated hometowns.

“These children deserve a platform to show the world what it’s like to grow up in the aftermath of Katrina,” O'Brien said. “No one can tell these stories the way our young filmmakers can, and clearly Spike’s dedication to telling the stories of these communities fuels this project.”

11. Um, I don't think that's a qualification for an honorary award....

Steven Spielberg and many other non-African Americans have received them before.

17. I thought she was a Latina
My wife set me straight. Soledad's father is Australian/Irish and her mother is the daughter of a mixed Latino and Afro-Cuban Cuban couple. Soledad's maternal grandfather, then, was a Cuban of African descent. Apparently, she cannot speak Spanish.

20. Yeah,she really shills for Bush.
Soledad O'Brien stated to FEMA director Michael Brown:
"How is it possible that we're getting better intel than you're getting? . . . FEMA has been on the ground for four days, going into the fifth day. Why no massive airdrop of food and water? In Banda Aceh, in Indonesia, they got food dropped two days after the tsunami struck."

How many people would be alive today if a food and water drop had occurred? How many people who will always be traumatized by events that occurred after the city was flooded could have been spared if officials had acted?

14. I weep for journalism then.
NAACP, what about Amy Goodman? Giving O'Brien that award and saying that she tells stories 'that need to be told' is absurd and insulting when there's so many better choices out there.

16. I call her and Miles O'Brien the "Giggling O'Briens" ... fluffity fluff fluff
HATE their morning newscast. Are they still on the morning newscast together? I don't know, because I never watch them. If I chose to, I'm sure I'd get more serious news from Regis and Kelly than I ever would from CNN's morning team. UGH!

Soledad O'Brien: Katrina kids, Spike Lee, and hope

By Soledad O'Brien

NEW YORK (CNN) -- What better way to tell the story of where New Orleans is going than through the eyes of young people? I've been grappling with ways to talk about the future of the city. Finally it dawned on me: Hand out cameras to young "reporters."

Almost 180,000 students were registered in New Orleans public schools before Katrina, according to the Louisiana Department of Education. As of October 2006, that number was down to 108,000.

I flew down to New Orleans after the show last week to hand out top-of-the- line DV cameras and to introduce the students to a man who knows a little something about directing, Spike Lee. Spike is like a rock star in New Orleans, because of his acclaimed documentary "When the Levees Broke" and because, well, he's Spike Lee. (Watch Spike Lee talk to New Orleans kids about recovering from Katrina )

CNN's Soledad O'Brien stated to FEMA director Michael Brown:
"How is it possible that we're getting better intel than you're getting? . . . FEMA has been on the ground for four days, going into the fifth day. Why no massive airdrop of food and water? In Banda Aceh, in Indonesia, they got food dropped two days after the tsunami struck."

21. If she REALLY cared, she would be doing a Katrina report every day of the week until
EVERY person displaced by the storm is housed, fed and taken care of in their home city NOLA. Maybe a report on the fact that the cabal withheld relief until Governor Blanco, a DEMOCRAT, caved to having LA. National Guard Federalized (which she WISELY refused to do), yet the Governor of MS., Haley Barbour, was given everything he needed immediately because he's a repuke. THAT came directly from Brownie. I didn't hear Soledad screaming about that. So she handed out a few cameras. I bet those kids would rather have had a home, clothes, a neighborhood, food to eat and maybe, just maybe, SOMEONE in the media fighting for them. She's a shill.
