Sydney- Australia has joined Italy and Spain in refusing to allow very thin women to model clothes. Organizers of Australian Fashion Week said Sunday they were adopting healthy weight guidelines for models.
"We don't want to see young girls hurting themselves in any way," Fashion Week organizer Simon Lock told national broadcaster ABC.
The initiative follows calls from the Australian Medical Association (AMA) for a ban on waif-thin fashion models.
"Body image and self esteem among teenagers and young women in particular are heavily influenced by models in magazines and on TV," AMA president Mukesh Haikerwal said. "The pursuit of the perfect look leads to a whole range of health threats such as eating disorders, dangerous dieting habits, smoking and depression."
