Giuliani beats HRC in NJ ?!?
This is a few days old, but I couldn't find it when it was posted. While I still doubt that Dame Rudy can get the nomination, I am beginning to think we don't want him to get the nomination. Even though Dame Rudy might piss off the far right vote, he definitely has the independent appeal. I won't count on MSM to tarnish the "hero of 9-11" myth either.

I kow that this 08 is far away, and I don't worry about Obama losing NJ since he doesn't have the name recognion yet, but HRC?!? Losing NJ?!? Yikes!

March 1, 2007 - Giuliani Widens Lead Over Clinton In New Jersey, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Front-Runners Widen Lead In Dem, GOP Primaries
Widening his lead in the 2008 presidential race in New Jersey, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani tops New York Sen. Hillary Clinton 50 - 41 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Arizona Sen. John McCain ties Sen. Clinton 45 - 45 percent.

This compares to a 48 - 41 percent Giuliani lead over Clinton in a January 25 New Jersey poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. In that survey, McCain had 44 percent to Clinton's 43 percent.

In this latest survey, independent voters back Giuliani 55 - 34 percent over Clinton; Giuliani also gets 91 percent of Republicans and 15 percent of Democrats. In a McCain- Clinton matchup, independents back the Republican 50 - 37 percent; McCain also gets 83 percent of Republicans and 10 percent of Democrats.

In other possible 2008 matchups:

* Giuliani tops Obama 50 - 39 percent;
* Obama edges McCain 45 - 41 percent.

1. THIS MEANS NOTHING. It is too far away from the primarys for people
to be making a final decision.

And I can make a poll slant anyway I want it to. Just depends on who you ask, how you phrase the question, and how the response is interpreted.

All I have to say it this is a damn shame. This is the type of candidates that both parties have pushing for the top job in the country. Hell, no one could be as bad as bush** but I sincerely believe that these two would be close.

3. It doesn't mean a lot, but it means something imo
Polls showing Giuliani beating HRC in blue states like NJ and PA is ominous, as most of America knows HRC and Giuliani. NJ ESPECIALLY knows Giuliani and HRC.

A poll between Gravel and Huckabee, now THAT would mean nothing.

7. Yeah, but NJ is a "weird" blue state.
There's lots of red and purple areas here. Plus our Republicans tend not to be like Republicans in other parts of the country. A NJ Republican is probably more liberal than the average Democrat in the south or midwest.

15. My, what short memories we have
In November, the polls said New Jersey Congressman Bob Menendez was going to lose his seat, too. link

2. Let's not forget
that for the last 6 or so election cycles, we have always been down in New Jersey before winning by 5+ points. Our side always comes home in the end. New Jersey is very, very close to New York and they have ties.

That aside, in presidential polls, the race almost always starts with the Democratic candidates as the underdogs. Giuliani would be a tough opponent, but I know that Hillary can take him on.

Rudy Giuliani exploited 9/11 for political gain and I hope they will use that against him if the Republicans are weak enough to nominate him. If the Republicans would nominate someone they would normally call a "baby killer" if he was a Democrat, that shows their weakness .

Do I like when I see polls like this? No, and New Jersey has definitely gotten more competitive over the years for whatever reasons...but we'll come home in the end. :)

4. I've been warning DUers for a year on Giuliani
But, very few seem to take me seriously. Then, in November 2008, just like in November of 2004, just like in November 2000, it will be, "how did was lose to such a schlub?"

I mean, George W. Bush is a poor speaker, has an arrest record, deserted the national guard during a time of war, was an alcoholic and a cokehead, was a failed businessman, and he was from an aristocratic New England family.

Yet, the media made him out to be a down-home Texas cowboy and a regular guy.

5. I think many DUers overestimate millions of voters
I think a large chunk of America spends more time thinking about their vote for American Idol than their vote for America's President.

Just because WE can tell Giuliani is a flip flopping, war mongering dolt, that doesn't mean everyone else can. Especially because MSM has sold him as the hero of 9-11.

I agree that we need to face the fact that UNINFORMED VOTERS have a big effect on elections.

8. I'm not surprised: suburban New Jerseyites got all the benefits of
Giuliani-time, without any of the downsides. Half of those people are IN the NJ suburbs because they're racists to begin with, so racist Giuliani is right up their alley.

13. Are you seriously saying that HALF of people in the NJ suburbs are racists?
Wow. Generalize much?

16. I generalize quite a bit
Sometimes its even an accurate statement. Generalizations are not incorrect by default, you know?

18. I guess I'm supposed to be insulted, or realize the error of my ways
Three things prevent that:

1) While I live in PA, I am a New Yorker, so I really don't care.
2) You fail to grasp the difference between some generalizations being accurate, and all generalizations being accurate. Throwing out random generalizations doesn't prove your point, as a matter of argument. I already built in that some generalizations are inaccurate.
3) See conclusion of point 1)

Cheers!

19. Well, I LIVE in the northern NJ suburbs and it is not a racist area.
I don't know where you got the idea that half of the people here are racists, but it's total bullshit.

9. Ghouliani is the flavor of the week, soon to be replaced
by the flavor of next month. Wait until the CONS go negative and the real RUDY comes out. Sir Eveready himself! That is one image that I don't need in my brain :puke:

These early polls are BULLSHIT.

12. Didn't they say that about Bush 7 years ago?
When the real bush comes out, nobody will like him - cokehead, alcoholic, new england elitist, failed businessman, fake cowboy, deserted the NG during the war, etc.

While some Republics may not like Rudy, I doubt many will be that turned off if the choice is between Rudy and that root of all evil, Hillary Clinton, do you really think the Republics will not vote Rudy?

Have you seen any negative media coverage of Giuliani after 9/11? The guy has practically been deified for being able to hold a megaphone on 9/11.

10. Name recognition
A lot of NJ residents commute to NYC and/or read NY papers and get NY news channels. In fact NJ doesn't have a major network station of its own because it is between the NY and Philly television markets.

Of course they are going to see Rudy's name in the news a lot. Hillary hasn't been First Lady since January, 2001.

11. The northern suburbs of NJ are populated by people who fled NYC
and applauded Giuliani's squeegee crackdowns to return Manhattan to developers. It also has a disproportionate population of cops and stock brokers who commute into NYC and return to their suburbs.

Southern Jersey is . . . southern Jersey.

14. Jersey was seriously hit on 9-11
Many, many of the victims were NJ commuters. My home county got hit the hardest.

I'm not saying that they can't get past this feeling close to election time. They've been making some good decisions lately (civil unions, who they elect). But I'm sure that 9-11 has a lot to do with his approval there. It's just a gut reaction from their pain.
