Jerry Falwell: Satan is the reason for Global Warming

If I want to learn about global warming I might watch Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” or conduct research on the Web, but I certainly wouldn’t seek Jerry Falwell’s opinion. I might seek the Rev’s take on whether or not a cartoon character is gay, but he’s the last person I would go to for scientific matters.

Jerry Falwell likes to pontificate on every subject under the sun; it’s not surprising he recently devoted a lot of hot air to global warming.

What’s responsible for global warming? Greenhouse gases? Al Gore’s mansion’s heating bills? Hillary Clinton’s shrill stump speeches? Britney Spears’ serial flashing?

Our consumerist, octane-propelled lifestyle has nothing to do with it. You have Falwell’s blessing to buy another gas-guzzling SUV and another deluxe gas-powered lawn mower.

According to Falwell, Satan is at fault — apparently the Prince of Darkness is determined to turn evangelicals into environmentalists. According to the Associated Press, Falwell told his congregation that global warming is “Satan’s attempt to redirect the church’s primary focus from evangelism to environmentalism.”

Man's arrogance and selfishness has caused it, we don't care to protect our planet, we just use and abuse it and her natural resources, forsaking all other forms of life.

That arrogance and selfishness are the gravest of sins. In Falwell's thinking, sin is the work of the devil, so he isn't far off the mark on the cause. But just like all of his other teachings, he misses the basic message (if he is listening to God, he doesn't translate the messages well). It is Christian to care about our planet and all other living creatures more than ourselves, to sacrifice our comforts and glory and even our lives for the good of others is Christlike.

This man violates the 2nd Commandment ever day of his life, everytime he spreads such messages to the masses.

What pisses me off is the way the media now sucks up to Falwell and his ilk since the Religious Right became so powerful.

Example: In an article about the possibility of finding intelligent life in the universe, they interviewed a Rabbi, an Imam,.....and Jerry Falwell. Both the Rabbi and Imam gave wonderful answers; Falwell, of course, pontificated that: if aliens weren't in the Bible, they don't exist. Obvioulsy, that isn't the whole range of opinions in the Christian religion. All this does is strengthen the opinion of people who aren't religious that Christians are just ignorant know-nothings.

By the way, you'd have to classify me as a sympathetic, non-religious (at least in a formal way) person.
