... Your question is too fine-grained for me to have a confident opinion on, however.

It's just how white folks are - they see black folks, and they think slave. You can tell by the topics white folks talk about re: black folks.

Most whites have a mixture of different European nations, and many have some Native American blood in there, too. Even tribal members of many nations are mixed. African Americans can be a mixture of just about anything--I believe Tina Turner, in her biography, "I Tina" said she was part Navaho.

One's family tree can be very interesting stuff. Mine has a few slave owners, a couple that deserted their NC Civil War Regiment (one was caught and hung), a car thief, an armed robber, some who ran speakeasies, a bunch of honest farmers, a Black hawk war veteran and the usual suspects. It's well worth doing the research.

8. A first person observation.

"Like the patriarchs of old our men all live in one house with their wives and concubines, and the mulattoes one sees in every family exactly resemble the white children." Mary Chesnut's Civil War Diary 1861

Note: Mary Chesnut was the wife of a wealthy official in the Confederate government. Well educated, well read, seemed to know everyone of significance in the south. She was very much ahead of her time for an aristocratic southern woman of the time. Her diary covers the period from just before the civil war to it's end and is fascinating reading.

my mother's family is from Maryland going back to the 1600's. my mother has researched her family's geneology back on her father's side, and found out that her father's grandfather was a SLAVE OVERSEER. This would be the hired white man whose job it was to do the whipping and the raping. I have seen a picture of this ancestor of mine and he looks all of what you'd think a person doing that would look like, ugly and mean -this is not someone I want to be related to.

but there it is, and I am.

I am an american. Part of my ancestry disgusts me.
