The incident took place just outside the city of Jalalabad, capital of eastern Nangarhar province, where a US-led coalition convoy came under attack by suspected Taleban rebels. ‘Sixteen people were killed and other 25 were wounded in a suicide attack and in the following exchange of fire,’ Noor Agha Zewak, spokesman for provincial governor told dpa.
It was not immediately clear whether the civilians were killed by US-led coalition fire or by the rebels.
Although there were no reports of damage or injuries to the soldiers, the troops opened retaliatory fire against a crowd, killing at least 16 civilians and wounding another 25.
