what is the basic difference between republics and democrats
answer first then read others' opinions.

for me it's been for a long time:
republicans believe that the end justifies the means, no matter how corrupt wrong illegal harmful or fatal those means might be.

and their ends are always their own enrichment never mind the country never mind the rest of the world.

that's my take on 'em

5. Repubs attack first
and don't give a damn about consequences, as long as there is some seed planted in people's minds. Dems are almost always counterpunching, so to speak. Here in Iowa first district, it cost the republic candidate the election, at least partially.

7. Democrats care about PEOPLE and their plight. Repukes care about money.

A quote from my repuke step son, to his father, my husband, who was complaining about Capital gains taxes he will have to pay...quote from son: "You need to stop voting from your heart and start voting for your pocketbook." YUP! That sums them ALL up in my mind. GREEDY. Self centered. They are incapable of feeling empathy or compassion. It's all about ME, ME, ME.

edited to add one of my favorite bumper stickers:

"Democrats think the glass is half full, Republicans think the glass is theirs."

9. Republicans believe..
... it's every man for himself, and that anything they have accomplished was 100% their doing.

Democrats believe that we're all better off if we take care of those who cannot take care of themselves. Democrats understand that many who have great accomplishments started out with advantages.

10. Democrats are less corrupt than Republicans
On the other hand, Republicans are MUCH more likely to stand up and fight for what they believe in.

More than a few Democrats will cross over and vote to advance (or give lip service to) the far right agenda. Almost no Republicans will cross over to advance the progressive agenda.

Haven’t wanted to comment, as the board has been skewed. Perhaps it is just me and it has been fun, but I digress. Lest your post/beauty of spirit go unnoticed, I know and agree.

In case anyone wants to sqabble (eat it) I let spellcheck have her narrow view of the world way with your posts. I didn't know "Plink" was a word, really.

20. Nowadays
The basic differences are the reasons that each party wants to rapidly expand government and intrude upon our rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness.

That's about it.

I don't think drawing broad conclusions about people from their political affiliations is particularly intelligent.

25. What the Republican party used to stand for, and what it stands for now.
Back when I was young, the GOP was for small, efficient government, making programs like Social Security, Medicare, etc. cheaper, better, more efficient. They were against a "nanny state" government, wanting less regulation, and more sensical regulation. The party was in the hands of the "fiscal conservatives." They believed in preserving things that made America great, like liberty, family, justice. They believed in a sensible foreign policy.

That party is dead. All the fiscal conservatives have fled. Now, the party's for Christian fundamentalism. For "family values" that include denying gays their 14th Amendment rights, outlawing abortions, lowering that glass ceiling. They're anti-intellectual, pushing crap like creationism, or its proxy "intelligent design," denial of global warming, etc. Their promise of smaller, lighter, better government has gone away, replaced by authoritarianism, destruction of our liberties, and establishment of a police state. The old promises of sensible foreign policy has been replaced by a foreign policy of bullying, abrogation of treaties and outright conquest.

Effectively, the Republican Party is the 21st century American equivalent of the Nazi Party.
