Jim Webb Blasts McCain, Assesses Obama's Appalachia Problem
Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 10:38 AM by RedEarth
Jim Webb, one of Congress' fastest rising Democrats and a Senator believed to occupy a spot on Barack Obama's vice presidential short list, is slated to throw his support behind the Illinois Democrat on Thursday, introducing Obama at a rally in Bristol, Virginia.

.........

"John McCain's comment about Barack not having sat down recently with General Petreaus means nothing," Webb said. "If you know who to listen to, if you know how to make judgments, if you know how evaluate information, you can do that. I don't think Franklin Roosevelt was ever at the front in France during WWII in order to help end the war."

On the other major foreign policy debate of the day -- whether or not a president should talk to hostile foreign leaders -- Webb again offered up a historical defense.

"Under the right circumstances, you have to ," he said. "My model for Iran is China in 1971. China was a nuclear power, it was a rogue state, it had American war on its border with Vietnam, it was spouting the same kind of hostile rhetoric. We took none of our military options off the table, we abandoned none of our alliances, but we reached out in a aggressive way diplomatically to bring China into the world community."

1. Obama doesn't have an Appalachia Problem. Appalachia has a Racism Problem.
Because Appalachia has a Poverty Problem.

Because America has a Republican Problem.

11. EXACTLY - a problem he wouldn't have had so starkly if the HRC campaign hadn't pushed distrust

of their opponent emphasizing his associations with 'scary blacks' and onetime long ago radicals into their heads at every turn, just to score points with those inclined towards racist attitudes.

Funny, how all those white people in Iowa saw Obama as a MAN, a leader. And with their sights set on SuperTuesday Clinton campaign saw 'ghettoing' Obama as a good tactic.

Despicable. Never should have happened. And since Clintons knew CLEARLY that she could NOT win the nomination shortly after Super Tuesday, the use of that tactic never should have CONTINUED. Except they need for McCain to win. Hillary2012.

2. Great comment by Webb!
But if he becomes VP, who will take his place in the Senate? A repuke or a Dem?

3. It would be very hard to get another Dem in that seat but getting a VP as good as Webb might be
worth it.

10. VA will have TWO dems in the Senate in 2008 if Webb isn't picked
Former Dem governor Mark Warner is heavily favored. He has a 30 point lead over GOP rivals.

4. Webb is going to be a HUGE help to Obama. He's got the military cred, and he doesn't mince words.
And he's got the Scotch-Irish background as well, to counter the McCain 'honor' thing. I like the idea of Jim Webb very much.

5. What's great about Jim Webb is that he has the credentials that are better than McCains
So he can call McSame out on all his lies and deceptions. The pefect VP choice, in my opinion.

13. He is, but I'll offer a rarely heard reason he shouldn't be chosen
this is going to sound odd, but here goes: I think Obama can well manage the tough foreign policy stuff, and the going-after-McCain on foreign policy stuff, best on his own, without seeming to delegate it to an attack dog.

I don't want to lose Webb from the Senate, but of course I'm fine with it if that's the best chance to ensure an Obama victory. I just don't think it is.

I lean more toward a gov. from the West, personally. (not one in particular, although Richardson and Sibelius come to mind.)

19. Attack dogs are very good in the VP position
Obama stays cool, calm and collected, and Webb or whoever can holler a little.

16. I don't want Webb as VP

I want him as Senate Majority leader. With 60+ Democratic Senators. He "would kick ass, and take names" as we used to say in the Marines.

With Obama in the WH, and Webb running the Senate, we might be able to undo the damage the republicans have done to the country over the last 8 years.

20. From today forward, any Obama "problem"

if he really truly has one, should be referred to as "Obama's Challenge"

All indications are he can overcome any of his so-called problems!!
