A public debate over allowing gays to serve in the military hurts the U.S. War on Terror, a top Pentagon official has asserted.

"The Global War on Terrorism is far-reaching and unrelenting," wrote David S. C. Chu, Defense Undersecretary for Personnel and Readiness, in a recent letter. "A national debate on changing" the Pentagon's ban on openly gay service members would bring "divisiveness and turbulence across our country," which "will compound the burden of the war."

Gee, Ed Schrock is gay, and he served a full career and retired as a Navy Captain and went to Congress as a Republican. When he was outed and subsequently resigned, I didn't see any of that divisiveness and turbulence, did you? In fact, he got a great job WORKING for the Congress...the sky didn't fall at all, did it?

Could someone explain how debating whether a gay person can serve, or is serving in the military could compound the war. I don't understand some of the reasoning the republicans make about these things.

Do you think it is because they want to cause conterversary. Is it because they want to stir things up. And another thing, do they think they can convince Americans that the terrorist, are glued to the TV, have hundreds of newspapers that they read everyday where they are getting all this information. If they are constantly watching our TV, reading our newspapers, then how do they have time to cause all the destruction they do. I don't understand. I suppose the bush administration takes us for a bunch of dopes.

...considering their entire military practiced homosexuality to promote comradery on the notion that a soldier will fight harder and longer (there's an off-color joke in there, somewhere...) with their lover fighting alongside them.
