WXPN Main Broadcast Audio Stream -- Philly's "Adult Alternative" station. Excellent selection. Home of
The World Cafe. Plus a wide selection of special programs like Mountain Stage, Q Zine (Queer music, culture, and politics), and Sleepy Hollow, the most unique radio programming since Mr. Tesla first fired up a coil.
NOTE: They play new artists' demo tapes. Yes. Yes they do.
XPoNential Music -- alternative, experimental, similar to many "college radio" stations but with DJs who remember to tell you what they just played. You never suspected there was so much mind-blowing music as they play here. The ghost of Darby Crash walks the halls -- smiling.
Folk Alley -- Co-produced by historic Kent State's WKSU. All Folk/Americana/Celtic; hillbillies, hippies, harpers, yodelin' cowboys, blind boys who sing like the heavenly hosts, Sothron harmony, worksongs north and south, musique Quebecois et Acadien, sea chanteys, the Guthries, Billy Brag with and without Wilco, Pete Seeger, and a whole lot more besides.
Y-Rock -- more popular alternative music, in the mold of WYXR before it sold out to The Man and turned into a restricted-playlist rap station. Y-Rock is young, brash, and so smart-ass you'll want to slap it's face. So go ahead. It's rock and roll.
They also have MANY downloadable songs, podcasts, and all-around stuff that is good for your head and soul alike.
If you like XPN and listen, join the station as a member. They give away lots of freebies. And since all our tax money is being spent on Faith-Based military contractors, they could really use all the help they can get.
And you'll hear stuff that's light-years beyond the usual gossipy drivel about Britney' booty, Beyonce's boobs, or the latest psychodrama on
American Idle. Examples: Ry Cooder on the political history of Los Angeles (and a bitchin' good story it is); Aimee Mann and Michael Penn talking about having a good "working" marriage; Ben Vaughn talking about damn near anything.
