The Ohio Army National Guard is restructuring to allow it to deploy more quickly using smaller, more specialized brigades that operate more like active-duty Army forces than a part-time reserve force, Guard officials said.

A story from the AP says, the National Guard nationwide is reorganizing its units around 3,500-member brigades rather than divisions, which encompass more than 10,000, said Brig. Gen. Matthew Kambic, adjutant general of the Ohio Air National Guard.

After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, officials began to look at ways to transform military units from large Cold War-era forces into small, mobile units capable of conducting rapid, focused operations.

The sweeping changes were necessary to keep the Guard relevant and effective, Kambic said.

"The Army can't support the mission without us," he said.
