Stupid people protest birth control pill...
WASHINGTON -- Anti-abortion groups plan to lead protests nationwide today against birth control pills, claiming the contraceptive often results in inadvertent abortions.

The "Protest the Pill Day" action will take place outside Planned Parenthood centers in 18 states and Washington, D.C., and will be answered by counterprotests from the National Organization for Women.

"The primary problem with the birth control pill is it actually kills human beings in the womb," said Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League, a national anti-abortion group. "We find as we talk to women who are on the birth control pill that they have no idea this can happen."

snip:
Besides preventing ovulation, the pill prevents viable embryos from implanting in the mother's womb, which the American Life League says constitutes a chemical abortion.

Medical experts disagree, saying a pregnancy begins only after implantation.

"When a woman tries to become pregnant, 60 percent of her eggs can become fertilized and then be spontaneously lost. Are those abortions? No," said Dr. Anita Nelson, fellow at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. "In fact, by suppressing ovulation and the number of fertilized eggs, the pill actually reduces the number of abortions, by their definition."

4. "60 percent of her eggs can become fertilized and then be spontaneously lost" ????

Is this guy saying that on average it takes
60 months for a women to successfully become
pregnant. I don't think he knows very much
about reproduction. At least the human kind.

8. You think someone named 'Anita' is a guy?
I agree it seems strange, but it could be an error by the reporter or one of those surprising medical statistics that's more complex than it first appears.

12. I may be wrong but the quotes surrounding the above remark indicate that Sedak is still being cited

and Dr. Anita Nelson is answering his argument.

11. Do you think women only produce one egg a month
like a Pez dispenser?

Many women have two or more follicles mature at the same time. When they are fertilized and implant, we call it fraternal twins or triplets.

13. I am merely stating the consequent of Sedak's argument. Whether a women

produces one or multiple eggs each month is
irrelevant. He's making the claim women
miscarry 60% of the time. I find 40% fertility
on average a little high.

17. Then you have some reading to do, don't you?
Seriously, when you study obstetrics, you begin to wonder how any of us got here.

It is not an efficient process. Lots of fertilized ova are shed, some even after implantation.

21. Meow. I never claimed to be an obstetrician so I will yield to your expertise. My

objection was the logical fallacies used by
the so called pro life movement whose intention
it seems is to outlaw any physical barrier to
conception.

Where will they stop? Will they attempt to
ban male masturbation on the grounds that millions
of potential offspring are murdered with every
ejaculation?

Back to the sin of Onan and women becoming mere
incubators.

18. A fertilized egg has a 60% chance of failing to implant and start a pregnancy
So if human life begins when an egg and a sperm combine to form a fertilized egg, that means that 3 out of 5 humans die while still at no more than several cell divisions of development without ever implanting in the uterine wall.

23. My argument is with Sedlak not Dr Nelson. Sedlak is claiming that any

drug which prevents fertilization and at the
same time may prevent implantation is an
abortificant.

He argues that since it is possible birth
control drugs prevent implantation of fertilized
eggs all birth control drugs are abortificants.

In the Kantian sense he his premises are
a posteriori/synthetic but is conclusion is
a priori/analytic.

25. And when you think about that fact, you have to be pretty happy
because it makes you realize that all of us who made it to birth won a big lottery right off the bat.

How can you go through life considering yourself a loser, when the first thing you ever did was beat the odds against successful gestation?

First they want to take away a womans right to choose, then they foist that abstinence only bullshit on the schools and now they want to take away preventative measures too? I notice they aren't going after condoms (and yeah I get that it's not the same), but of course those are the MAN'S choice. What a bunch of asshats!!!

16. aw got ya
have you seen the local kooks from operation rescue fighting here in Kansas?

The founder of one of the anti-abortion movement's most famous organizations said Friday in Wichita that the movement is badly weakened --"on the ropes" -- in part because the nation's clergy have lost their desire to pursue the cause and in part because young people don't care.

Speaking at a news conference he called at the Hyatt Regency Wichita, Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry said the movement has lost steam because religious leaders have lost courage, young people have lost interest, and many churches fear taking on the fight.

While some leaders of the anti-abortion movement were willing to endorse presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, who supports abortion rights,Terry said, he was arrested earlier this year protesting abortion outside one of Giuliani's campaign offices in New Hampshire.

It's amazing. Another, right in your neighborhood is "Fall from Grace". I watched this at the insistence of my 17 year-old son. He was LIVID when he saw it.

26. Aww. Poor Randall Terry. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
The anti-abortion movement is dying because clergy aren't into it and young people would rather, well, have sex without feeling like they're going to hell if something untoward happens.

My heart weeps for the fella. :-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-L3JMk7C1A

Obligatory Monty Python bit... relevant part starts at 7 minutes.

Putting something on your John Thompson is a foundation of non-catholic christians right up there with the right to divorce and eating what you damn well please on Friday.

I know technically using a condom is not the same as being on the pill. But this action is brought to you by the "Society against people having a good time" a surprisingly non-partisan group of people who's slogan is "We're not happy unless your not happy."
