Those of you who've given up TV,

did you also give up watching DVD's or videotapes?

I could do without TV but I don't know about the DVD's and videotapes.

1. No! We subscribe to Netflix.

I watch clips of news shows on the internet. That way I can choose what I want to watch and avoid listening to the garbage from the really stupid talking heads.

I can also switch to another website when sponsors present their ads. I'm not the advertisers audience anyway because I don't have the money to buy their junk and wouldn't buy it if I did.

5. Netflix flicks cost $1.72 per each and they have more than enough documentaries and artsy-geeky

offerings to keep me happy. Wouldn't have a TV in the house otherwise. Well, maybe to watch Colbert and Jon on YouTube.

3. We rarely watch TV unless there is something really good on

the history chanel. We do watch good movies, but most stuff on TV just plain sucks.

Watching tv is bad for me. The flashes and fast edits used in the promos/ show opens/commercials all hurt my eyes and sometimes give me headaches.

I've read somewhere that humans aren't really wired to view all that flashing stuff, it's not good for our brains. I much prefer the scope and pacing of a good movie.

7. Yep.. And for well under $50 you can connect just about any computer

To just about any TV with very nice results picture wise..

I have an old Sony commercial video projector (like you used to see in sports bars) that gives a 72" picture hooked up to the computer.. Great for movies..

14. Does it not tire out your eyes to watch entire movies on the computer?

8. No, I still have a TV, just no cable and no antenna

so I can't get over the air either. But I do subscribe to Netflix and rent DVDs/videos from my local library as well.

11. I gave up going to the movies.

Instead, I watch films at home on DVD. But broadcast teevee - never. Most of the time, my set sits in the corner, plug coiled in the back, under a dust cloth. Saturday night has turned into movie night. Then I pull it out, connect cables to the DVD player (which spends the week in its box on a shelf) and watch my flicks.

I recently started Netflix. My local video shop had been stocking mostly straight-to-DVD crap (Hollywood Video). And Netflix is cheaper.

I get my news from the Internet.

DVD's are just as two-dimensional as regular tv programming.
Always remember that it is called programming for a reason.

Learn to play a musical instrument or get together with friends and nieghbors and make music

Visit churches or places of worship that are not your own.
Volunteer with groups that help others.
Stop and smell the roses
Visit a museum.
Go camping
Have a bon fire\drum circle
Learn to paint or sculpt
Dance naked in the rain
Tell someone that you love them

13. Nope.

I also make very liberal use of Youtube and Google video, and have also learned to bittorrent, so that I'm able to watch many TV shows without having a TV. I also stream stuff like CSPAN, and make use of the podcasts for Countdown.

I like watching stuff, I just don't like giving money to the cable companies, and I don't like having random corporate shit coming into my home all the time.

17. I watch nothing

well, mebbe 1 or 2 movies a year. No You Tube or any of that sort of stuff, either. The content is bad enough, but the medium is insidious. It is too accommodating to our vision oriented monkey brains, it substitutes images for reality. Think you can tell the difference? Don't bet on it.
