TV Host Bill Maher Suggests Dick Cheney's Death Would Save Lives

WASHINGTON — More people in the world would live if Vice President Dick Cheney died, political commentator Bill Maher said, raising few eyebrows despite suggesting the death of the U.S. vice president would be a good thing.

...

During the Friday night broadcast of his HBO show "Real Time With Bill Maher," Maher and his guests, including Democratic Rep. Barney Frank and former Republican Rep. Joe Scarborough, debated the removal of comments from the HuffingtonPost Web log praising the idea of Cheney being assassinated.

Frank earned applause when he quoted bloggers saying the bomb was wasted when it missed Cheney. Maher asked the panelists whether it was wrong for blog host Arianna Huffington to remove the comments.

Quoting the blog, Maher said, "I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power, people wouldn’t be dying needlessly tomorrow."

...

But the latest comment received few responses, being overshadowed by a remark by conservative commentator Ann Coulter made Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Coulter said she would discuss John Edwards' bid for the 2000 Democratic presidential nomination except "it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot.'"

2. A couple of points here..
First of all, no one here is condoning the statements of Maher and supporting the death of anyone. Secondly, Maher is speaking for himself and noone in the democratic party. If that's what he thinks, so be it. It is not the democrat's point of view.

Coulter on the other hand, is speaking as a republic party member and for the republic party. She has institutionalized her comments in the republican platform.

7. Very good points. Maher is speaking on a TV show (a pay channel, so the FCC
has no purview), and Coulter is speaking at a POLITICAL gathering. There is a difference.

If Coulter said the same thing on a TV show, I'd still think she was an asshole, though.

9. Remember when the leader of the Christian right made a death threat against Clinton?
In 1994, Republican Senator Jesse Helms chose the anniversary of JFK's assassination to proclaim that if Bill Clinton came down to North Carolina, he'd better watch out and bring a bodyguard.

Helms was universally censored by his fellow Republicans and never again given any support by the conservative right. Right? Right? He was, wasn't he? Please tell me that the Republican Party as a body and as one voice condemned his statement!
