Just curious.

3. I thought they were already cloned
and that perhaps there was something wrong with the original that kept getting exponentially more degraded with each copy.

Frankly, we have enough people the old fashioned way.

On the other hand, the idea of growing organs for people is interesting, although all it would likely do is keep rich people alive longer.

8. No don't think so. Science would have marked that strain as useless
long ago, and probably killed it off, mercifully.

Frankly I enjoy doing it the old fashioned way, and thank dog it doesn't work every time.

4. Will I be able to force my clone to make better choices than I did...
leaving his brain cells relatively intatct, thus enabling him to go to college and get a real job and support both of us?

If not, why would I want another me around? I don't think I'm all that great to begin with!

5. What about organ cloning?
That would seem to be free of most of the ethical snares and might still yield astonishing therapeutic benefit.

12. I'm Less Interested In That for Two Reasons
1. It's already here.
2. (don't want to say just yet, as I'm trying to keep my own view out of contention at this time).

...harvesting limited amounts of tissue, let's say, for patching burns, would be a good thing.

7. You'd have to tell me what the goal was
It's like increasing efficiency in cars. It sounds great, but make them more efficient at doing what? We just end up having to travel further for everything, and then wonder why Wal-Mart and the rest aren't going away.

9. Well, I'm Not Sure What the Goal Is
I'm not sitting in the CEO's office at BigBiotech company, nor am I a department head chair at a research college.

21. Do they even know what the goal is?
Does anyone anywhere know what the goal is of anything we're doing? Can there be a goal? Can we one day say, "well, we've done everything", or can we never stop? If we can't stop, then there is no goal. If we can stop, when do we know when to stop? If we don't know when to stop, then we can't stop. If we do stop, then what? Entropy? Could we let things fall apart at this point? If we can't, then we can't stop. If we can't stop, then it doesn't matter if the CEO or the research team or the rabble know what the goal is, we just have to do it. We have to keep moving forward, endlessly. Well, the only way to do that would be to cure death. If we do that, then we have a bunch of new problems, which will require even more energy to solve. Not only solve, but kept at a certain point of order, but we can't stand still, we have to go forward. So we'll have to improve on perfection at some point. Maybe that's the goal.

13. Kind of depends what you mean by cloning
Too often people have a vision of cloning like you'd see on SciFi. I don't think anyone really wants to see another, maybe evil, me wandering around. However if you mean cloning of stem cells to treat and understand disease then I'm all for it.

15. A clone is just a twin....
...so I don't see any real point in people cloning themselves. Considering the expense and difficulty involved, I don't see someone going out there and making say...an army of George Bush's. They wouldn't be Bush. Some of them might actually turn out to be ok people.

However I believe human cloning has potential for the medical field, so I'm all for it. I don't see anything particularly immoral about it.

18. I fully support stem cell research and the ability to reproduce
organs and heal diseases, but cloning of complete human beings would be disasterous.

23. The risks of deformed, or someway abnormal is too high to
justify the risk. I seem to recall several "mistakes" when they began cloning animals, and Dolly was the first SUCCESSFUL one.

We do many tests to TRY to insure human babies areborn without defects, and my heart goes out to the many families who have children born with problems. Why would you do a cloning procedure that would virtually insure problems?

Then of course, there's the obvious question. WHY WOULD YOU EVEN WANT TO CLONE A HUMAN?

Ican see many super egotists wanting more of "THEM" in the world, but think about that! Would you REALly want more Shrubs or Donald Trumps in the world??????

Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 03:08 PM by Cerridwen
in each others faces; the use and the outcome of which we have undeniable evidence (which is sometimes still denied). We can't agree when life begins and which life has priority or value over the other; or if that should be contained in the equation. Hell, we can't even agree if a "well armed militia" is the National Guard or the populace.

Cloning? In a vacuum, without societal, political and religious influences or in a good sci-fi read - great stuff! In reality? The mind boggles. Civil rights for clones? We still limit civil rights to select groups as defined by an arbitrary "norm." At what point does the cloning material become "human"? Property rights? Does my property belong to me or to me and my clone? Is my clone an extension of me or a separate entity/human? Do clones have souls? Did I just share my soul with my clone? Hell, we can't even decide if there is a soul and if so are we humans the exclusive owners of said souls.

In theory. Great idea! In this world, not so much.

edit: wrong word used *sigh*

26. Human cloning constitutes everything from reproducing undifferentiated stem-cells
to creating new organs and replacement parts to entire beings.

The possibilities for increasing both the quality and length of human life, are truly staggering, and since the OP is so completely vague, I had to vote for it being good.

27. What kind of cloning, and for what purpose?
"What do you think of food?"

"What do you think of the sky?"

"What do you think of electricity?"

Any of the offered responses require much more of a prompt.
