LARGO, Fla. -- An interfaith coalition made up of Tampa Bay area religious leaders will gather at Largo City Hall on Tuesday morning to protest that city's decision to fire an official who recently announced that he will undergo a sex-change operation.
The Largo City Commission voted 5-2 last week to begin the process of firing City Manager Steve Stanton, 48, the city's top official for 14 years, less than a week after he announced plans to pursue the operation.
The religious leaders who formed the coalition are hoping that other like-minded citizens will participate in their protest, which is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, in an effort to have commissioners reverse their decision to fire Stanton. The group said the firing amounts to discrimination.
At least 100 members from a dozen different faiths are expected to attend the protest, Local 6 News reported.
