If you're against DUI/DWI you should be for public transportation
The wife and I don't even go out anymore because we're so afraid of DUI after having a beer. We both know people who have had their lives ruined over literally 1 beer. AZ has strictest DUI laws in the country.

If we had a train or even reliable affordable taxis we would go out on the town more.

1. Find an alcoholic like me to be your designated driver. I'll drink cokes and you drink what you want
You pay me to drive you or call a cab or call a designated driver hot line if you have one. I haven't had a drink in over 22 years.

3. There definitely needs to be a massive push for nationwide public transit.
It would improve the quality of life for all ages, not just us 30 something married couples who like to party on occasion.

4. Move close to a good bar and walk home.
That's what I do.

And I have had some wonderful experiences because of that short walk home.

6. You'd probably be closer to a lot of other stuff
So you wouldn't need a car even if you were sober

8. Well we actually live pretty close to the city
As close as we could afford anyways. If we can ever get out of this house we plan on moving to Boston so that we don't have to have cars anymore. And that would solve our issue as well.

I just think that we should all talk about the various benefits of public transportation.

Cars have been sold to us as a freedom, when in reality they are a shackle.

Think about how much people spend on their cars every year! And you have to maintain them, insure them, etc etc. I'll take the damn train any day of the week.

15. If people had to take cash out of their wallet for all their auto expenses no one would drive
But since most of the expenses are drafted out of accounts or paid for with a check or credit card people don't stop to really think about how much it's costing them.

31. It's true. When you do the calculations it's staggering
In total we pay almost as much to operate our cars just for the priviledge of getting to work as we do to pay our mortgage.

Now that I work from home I don't have the huge gas expenses anymore, but it still costs a buttload of money!

7. Here the SO and I don't go out as
Edited on Thu Jun-12-08 04:49 PM by CC
much because we don't want to be on the roads with drunk drivers. When we do go out it is very easy to choose one of us the be the designated driver or if we are with friends the DD is always chosen ahead of time. I have yet to meet anyone that was arrested and charged for just having 1 glass of wine or 1 beer. Now met some that were speeding, ran lights or doing various other dangerous things and were suspected of drunk driving and turned out they were just assholes though not drunk. Unfortunately I meet anywhere from 50 to over a hundred convicted drunk drivers every other month and get to see the charges they were convicted of, blood alcohol reading etc.

12. Hehehe yah. That's all the cops do down here is write tickets and give breathilizers
They busted a coworker of mine for going out to his car to grab a pack of smokes while drunk. All they have to prove is that you've been drinking and that you have keys in your pocket. Seriously.

14. Yes but this is a Repiglican state. They make money off of the poor
By taxing things like smokes and speeding, DUI's and other fines etc.

Property and business taxes are extremely low, worker protections are minimal, etc. Big Business owns the state, the state owns you. It's a lovely little facist microcosm.

Hopefully if we can get out of this house we can move to Boston asap.

But I do hear the 1 beer thing a lot here too. Yet when you go look at the paper work it is always more than that that gets them stopped.

A glass of wine with dinner and not have your life ruined, as they do it here in AZ.

23. Yes - and if you're against global warming you should be for public transportation!
And if you're for children living healthier lifestyles you should be for public transportation - one reason why so many kids sit indoors all the time is that their parents won't let them out in case they get run over, with all the cars about these days. It wasn't quite as bad 30 years ago.

I think the UK is better than the US for public transport; though it could certainly be improved.

Unless you're into line-dancing, wayne newton, the scorpions, etc. The nightlife here really does suck heh.

34. It sucked where I grew up as well...
and to be honest, I'd have to have about five glasses of wine before I'd ever go dancing, so there is that.

I'm lucky to live in NYC where there are subways, busses and taxis where ever I need to go. But, my husband and I don't drink all that much anymore, so going out to parties in the burbs where my family and high school friends live is quite easy.

33. Here in the U.S., drunks drive because not driving reduces one to the level of a child
In Japan, the drunks infest the trains in the evening. It's not pleasant to see puke on the train floors, but it's good to know that the drunks are not out driving around.
