BENTONVILLE - Wal-Mart is under federal investigation for unauthorized recording of phone calls, and the company says it has fired a technician for intercepting various communications.

The company says calls between its public relations staff and a reporter for the New York Times were monitored or recorded from September through January.

Wal-Mart says the practice was not illegal because all its workers are subject to having their calls monitored and the law says a telephone conversation may be recorded if one party has given his or her consent.

1. "one party consent" is a STOOOOOPID "law". Of course

there's always "one party" consent if the person taping it is talking. The one who does not "expect" to be taped is the one who needs to be told..

2. I used to work

for a large multinational in the financial services industry. Every phone call was recorded as was every keystroke on the computer and every access into the secure facilities (whick happened to include a separate secure entry into the restrooms). Before that I worked in insurance claims. Again phone calls were routinely recorded.

Not justifying the recording of phone conversations without the knowledge of the parties involved. Just pointing out that it is very common. It is something I have come to expect from people in certain positions.

Best advice? Don't ever say anything you might regret.
