We lost one of the Avenger clan to a heart attack Wednesday
He was on the other side of the equation. Humble Appalachian kid, never got very far, drank and smoke to counter his despair. He loved to take me up the hill to shoot pistols at empty cans.

Answered the call-up to deal with Vietnam. No Washington dinners with the powers that set this world to wrong.

We will put him to rest in the mountain side tomorrow. He left nobody who was dependent upon him, just the family he grew up with and watched him spiral down.

vets who's lives went into the shitter and died because of being in that god damned war.

I had a friend who was a tank driver. He always felt guilty because his tank broke down one day when it was the lead tank. Another tank took it's place and was hit and all died in it.
He smoked pot heavily and took his own life years after he came home. He never could live with not dying in Nam.

6. 800,000 men in the theater X the probability of "adjustment disorder" = a lot of men
My inlaw ended up with a safe assignment because the war was winding down. His older brother was nearly killed in that country--the only survivor of his squad in a skirmish. He has extreme problems in that arm and symptoms of agent orange disease. Poor guy hid out in a trailer for years after he was discharged. He always was aggressive, but he didn't deserve this.

And then there were people like you and me in 2002 who said "don't let this happen again". Thanks for your thoughts and I don't know what to tell you about the tank driver. A respectful memory may be all we have.
