Cheney treated at hospital for blood clot
Vice president experienced 'discomfort' following overseas trip

WASHINGTON - Doctors discovered a blood clot in Vice President Dick Cheney's left leg Monday, a condition that could be fatal if left untreated.

The 66-year-old Cheney, who has a history of heart problems, will be treated with blood-thinning medication for several months, said spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride.

She said Cheney visited his doctor's office in Washington after feeling minor discomfort in his calf. An ultrasound showed the blood clot — called a deep venous thrombosis — in his left lower leg.

2. He should have walked around on those long flights.
A friend of mine dropped dead from a pulmonary embolism while standing in line at Customs in Mexico.

13. Does anyonereally expect me to believe Cheney flew
22 hours (I think that's the flight time I heard), on AF2, and DIDN'T walk around? Comeon! That plane is laid out similarly to AF1, and it's not much different than your livingroom! There aren't aircraft seats in the part of the cabin where the VP is that are anything even close to the FC ones on a 747 International flight! They're like your recliner with seat belts.

I don't doubt he has a blood clot, but unless he used other aircraft to fly to all the different Countries he just visited, and only used AF2 for theflights over and back,I'm not buying the story that this clot was cause by him having to sit in an aircraft seat for many hours at a time!

16. Hey, waaaait a minute...
I just remembered that he didn't fly AF2 from Singapore to the Middle East. He was on the "Strom Thurmond Express" (or whatever the hell it's called), a much less fancy aircraft.

Well, that could be ironic...

35. He was on a cargo plane that had a TRAILER inside it
They load on a big old movie star trailer into the cargo hold of the plane so that he can travel incognito. The trailer has armchairs and stuff. I could sit in the Lazy Boy and watch football while he flew.

33. I believe it.
I know an active, relatively young man (47) who had this happen on a flight from NYC to Italy. I have no problem believing that Cheney did not get out of his seat for 22 hours except to go to the can. I'm sure that walk down the aisle is more exercise than he gets on most days.

18. I'm sorry to hear about your friend, Olney Blue.
Pulmonary embolisms are awful. :( My dad suffered a massive PE after undergoing hernia surgery back in 2000 - he survived, but he got VERY lucky. :scared: I don't think I'll ever be able to forget how he looked lying there at the top of the stairs, gasping for breath and fading in and out of consciousness as his skin turned a horrible purplish-grey...it was terrifying, and I feel for anyone who has lost a loved one to that.

29. yes, he was hospitalized for three weeks
Edited on Tue Mar-06-07 12:10 AM by Skittles
he's back to work but OMG the dietary restrictions he must follow now - lots of stuff he cannot eat, and he cannot eat a lot of ONE THING, ever. What is scary is this guy had no prior symptoms - he told me it was on his days off work, he just suddenly felt like he could not get a full breath, then it got steadily worse so he drove himself to the emergency room - and ended up in critical care for a bit! :o

May I ask what happened to your dad - did he recover?

39. Wow. I'm glad he's OK!
But yeah, it is realy scary when there are no prior symptoms. :scared: My dad is fine now, although he has to take Coumadin every day and go in for checkups every few weeks to get his blood tested, and he tends to bruise really easily because of the Coumadin. (Thanks for asking. :)) I'm so glad he's all right, and it may have actually been a blessing in disguise (I can't believe I'm saying that, but...) - it turns out my dad has a fairly rare genetic disorder that causes blood to clot more quickly than usual, and - guess what? - I've inherited it as well. (Lucky me. :eyes: ) It's good that we found that out, though, because at least now I know that I have to take extra precautions (making extra sure to get up & walk around on long trips, staying the hell away from birth control pills, making sure doctors know about my condition if I'm ever in a serious accident and/or requiring surgery for any reason, etc.). But yeah, it is really scary when it comes out of the blue like that, and I'm really glad your co-worker is all right. :hi: Peace.

23. The other problem is it traveling to the heart, which in Cheney's case
is even worse. His heart (if he really has one) is already damaged.

Have her massage his legs!

but I doubt it, since the PNAC agenda is full steam ahead. Cheney will give a fight.

Here's some information about DVT.
