Highest ATM fees? The US is #3

According to CBC's "The National," Italy has the highest charges, followed by Germany, the US, and Canada.

I'm sure that American banks will do all things necessary to remedy that.

1. i almost never use out of network atm's, i actually looked through 6 months

worth of statements and added up my fee's, needless to say i was horrified and pissed.

2. Those ATM fees help the big banks gobble up the smaller ones.

The reason I'm with the bank I'm with is because they are big enough to have ATMs *everywhere* in the U.S. and so I never need to pay ATM fees.

3. My bank refunds all other bank's ATM fees

I hate to admit it, but mega-bank TD-BankNorth is the best bank I've ever had. Great customer service, and they actually credit my account for any "out of network" ATM fees. I can use an ATM at a ski resort that charges $2.50 for a withdrawal, and BankNorth puts the $2.50 back in my account within a day or two. The ATM card has "NO ATM FEES" printed across the top, and store clerks regularly ask me "What's this?" I had one clerk in a hardware store pick up the phone and call the 800 number on my card while I was still at the register to ask how she could get one of the cards. Great marketing gimmick, sure, but it also saves me bucks. I dig that. But they should pay me for all the times I've had to explain to strangers WTF "no ATM fees" means.

4. I don't think I've left home with more than fifty bucks in cash on me for 10 years.

And I don't use ATMs for that, I just cash a check down at the grocery store when I think I ought to have a few greenbacks in the wallet.

5. When this was introduced over 10 years ago I predicted

that such fees would never last, and that banks would, as they compete eventually eliminate the fees.

Boy was I wrong.

7. Who has that much money to spare?

Reality check... I must really be poor, because I would never come close to considering using an ATM machine other than one through my own bank which of course is free. Except in case of a dire emergency. And in most cases these seem to be privately owned ATM machines setup by some fat profiteers.
