a ban on booing and offensive chants at high school sporting events proposed
"Boo Birds" May Be Banned From HS Games

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Booing and loud jeering of officials at high school sporting events could soon become illegal in Washington state.

The state board that regulates high school sports is drafting guidelines to reduce negative conduct by spectators.

The board says that because so many fans have become loud, obnoxious and abusive, that fewer people are willing to serve as coaches and referees.

The guidelines would include a ban on booing and offensive chants. But the penalties wouldn't be too stiff; repeat violators will be ordered to leave the game.

5. No,it's a good idea
I see way to much violence, usually from the parents,at youth sports. It's why I wouldn't coach a mite hockey team.Every damn parent thinks their kid is the next Bobby Orr,and God forbid you don't play him enough.

The youth league has had to ban a lot of parents (one who started a fight with a coach, another who came onto the ice and attacked a ref).I've seen two fans from opposite sides start a fight over the taunts from some.I've heard full grown adults yell swears at seven year old kids.

None of that is "fun". And what message is it sending to the kids? The same message Bush and the like send;violence is how to solve things.

I was thinking about old fashioned, good natured taunts & chants & such like when I was in school in the 80s... I should have guessed someone was out there ruining it for everyone else.

One way or another- America 2007: NO FUN ALLOWED

Calling a nine year old a "little fucker" seemed a bit much :)

4. That's a good law
We had that law in Montana and it stopped all the referee problems immediately. I think we have it in Oregon too. It's not a big deal, you basically just can't threaten officials and that's a bad example to be setting for kids anyway.

10. Some of that WAS rather fun.
See that basket, See that ball
Come on, stupid, hit the wall!

Or taunting opposing pitchers with creative (but not obscene names)

Like hollering. "Hey. DRAWBACK!!"

13. It'd be one thing to ban the likes of 'You SUCK!'
But to ban booing? That's just un-Mer'kin. x(

15. "of officials"
Did everybody in this thread just miss those two critically important words.

The article doesn't say it will be illegal to boo or chant at a game. It says it will be illegal to hiss and boo and swear at OFFICIALS.

16. About dang time.
Sportsmanship is nearly dead in this country, and sports fans are the most obnoxious people on earth. High school is the last place you can do something like this, because it's a supposedly educational environment for children.

Let them learn obnoxious chants in college, as God intended.
