Happy 70th Birthday to Valentina Tereshkova.

Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova was the first

woman in space in June 1963.

When she completed her mission, she had logged

more hours in space than all the U.S. Astronauts

combined.

The Western press called it a publicity stunt

and referred to Ms. Tereshkova as a "girl"

Cosmonaut, giving me one of my earliest examples

of sexism and biased reporting.

Stunt or not, she earned her place in history.

Valentina later married a fellow Cosmonaut and had at least one child. The report in the US was that this was a mating arranged by the Party to demonstrate that space travel would not impair fertility. Gotta populate those off-world colonies, after all.

Stranger things than that were done in the USSR, so it might well be true. Nonetheless, your comment about sexist, biased reporting on this side of the Iron Curtain is also quite valid.
