OMG!!!! It's happening.....

I've been unemployed for a year after losing my job of 20 years at the same time I was starting treatment for cancer. It's been a very long and rough year since last February. Anyway, I elected to retrain in a new field and went back to school to learn to be a paralegal. This morning in my e-mail was a solicitation for my resume from a firm in the area. This coming when I was starting to panic about employability. OMG!!! wish me luck!!! Pray my ISP gets its act together because when I hit the send button with my resume and coverletter, their e-mail system blew up. I don't know if it went and I can't log on now. The tech line says they are "working with e-mail issues." Something in this universe has to work right. If it does, I'll be starting again in my 50s. Please, please, please.

you unsure of whether the one you emailed went through. Then ask if they would liek you to also re-send it by email, for their convenience, just in case it didn't go through.

If the email problems are going to go on past a few hours, you need to get that resume in their hands by hand delivery if necessary.

61. I just got comfirmation of receipt of my resume and

the attorney told me he would let me know within 2 weeks. He also asked me if the commute (about 25 mi.) would be difficult for me. It's the same as the commute for the last job I had.

72. Best of luck. As one who had to "remake" myself in my 50s I sympathize.

You might want to print it out and hand deliver it(wearing a coat and tie) to the receptionist at the law firm explaining what happened with the email. It'll show a bit of initiative. (I'm sort of restating what AngryAmish said up thread.)

I also got into the legal field (as a contractor) and doing pretty well, and enjoy the heck out of it. Luckily I have insurance from my former employment as I saw the handwriting on the wall and bailed out taking early retirement.

Finding someone who wants to hire full-time someone in their 50s is very difficult these days.

Not in my experience. I started out as a legal secretary for my father. Drafted petitions, wills, general denials, deeds, etc. etc.

Then I was a court reporter for almost twenty years and spent most of my time at the court house. I got a biology degree as well. That is extremely useful because it helps a lot in expert testimony, doctors and so forth.

While working at the courthouse I went to law school at night. I graduated twenty years ago. For a year and a half (recently) I spent looking for a job as a paralegal, I got ONE interview and NO job offers. You would think someone who worked in the legal system their whole lives and has a J.D. would be desirable. In my case it was not true.

I do not understand why, if paralegal jobs are so hot, I can't get one.
So I'm gonna retire because three college degrees and tons of experience are not enough to even get a job in the rat race.

I feel like both my BA and my JD were a complete waste of time, as neither of them has helped me get a job. So long to ten years of college time and thousands of dollars.

I am dealing with some of the same issues, though for different reasons. I am unable to continue in my chosen profession, so I must find another. I do not want to go on disability until I absolutely have to, but it is hard to start over with virtually no experience, especially when you must tell your prospective employer that you are disabled with a degenerative disorder and chronic pain.

Insurance? Forget about it! I just thank god for Wisconsin's Badgercare. Without my pain meds I would be unable to function, and I hurt so bad I have to walk around and 'shake it off.'

I am only 36, and worried as hell about my future. Any thoughts or prayers would be appreciated.
