Poll question: Because we just don't have enough opportunities for snark since GD-P
was shut down,

How do you feel about people who "sample" before they buy in the produce section?

I mean, c'mon, look, thump and smell all you want, but needing to sample the stuff before you buy?

1. sorry
i can't participate in your poll because i only like to eat foods that are in shrink wrap and have a shelf life of at least 500 years.

natures perfect food is the twinkie (nature...dow chemical...whatever).

i don't think there's a single ingredient in twinkies that is edible on it's on, but they last a really long time. i've never actually seen a twinkie go bad, altho i did have one once that disolved into a kind of brown liquid while still perfectly sealed in it's shrink wrap.
in retrospect i wish i had saved that liquid twinkie.......i wonder what it would be worth on e-bay

2. one local supermarket has samples put out for the customers
We regularly shop there and *nosh* our way to the check out, having purchased what we had sampled. But this is a Whole Foods store, that has a history of giving samples.

The other big chains are slowly *disappearing* their fresh produce sections - enclosing everything in plastic so that you cannot check for freshness. I've stopped buying their produce because of that (AND because of their astounding prices).

Big chains becoming *produce police* will only furhter shrink their sales. It's their loss.

3. The farmer down the road tends to tell me to take an extra ear of corn
because I don't insist on shucking each ear before I buy it.

4. I have to admit to being a gang shucker in the supermarkets
But that is BECAUSE the corn is coming from elsewhere, and I don't trust the stores enough to quality check the produce. I can see where you would be more polite with the local farmers, because if you bought produce that was crappy, you'd have the opportunity to complain at the next visit.

I *wish* we had more local farmers selling produce.
