lol, Chavez for President?
I just wondered how it would be if Hugo ChaveZ' socio-democratic movement spread to the underpriviledged regions of the United States. Would we suddenly be seeing occupied factory buildings and local citizen councils opening public hospitals in Detroit? lol, not such a bad prospect maybe...

1. We will, after the collapse, have two choices.
Either we will reorganize as a democratic socialist society, or we will descend further into tyranny. My guess is that we will actually break up into two nations, the fabled Jesusland of the redstate regions will opt for tyranny and theocracy while the blue states will form a progressive democratic socialist union. Of course the theocrats will not be happy with such an arrangement, so the future does not look good at all. All those nukes are a huge problem as well.

9. Sure, the Revolution is at hand,
just as it has been for the last century. Keep dreamin'.

11. No the revolution is not at hand.
The collapse on the order of the great depression almost certainly is. We are doing far less than nothing about the entwined crises of peak oil and catastrophic climate change, our system is running off a cliff and our leaders know it, while many ordinary folk, you included, appear to be naively thinking that all is just fine. It aint. Revolution? no thanks. Evolution, picking up from where we left off, where we parked that Great Society thirty or so years ago, picking up from the fitfull start of New Deal reforms of 70 years ago, would be a good idea though.

13. Yep. World's gonna collapse.

End of times. No hope but to band together under the Red flag. :eyes:

Energy supplies are a real concern. So is climate change. However, "everything's gonna collapse and we'll rebuild as (insert philosophy)!" is rather tiresome.

14. No not the world, the current economic system.
The planet is quite fine, and even if the thin crust of life disappears, the world will be spinning for quite a while. The current economic arrangements are broken. Energy supplies are not just a concern, they are a crisis that we are currently fighting a low level planetary war over. But you just keep on with your optimism, it is quite charming. That last collapse just shy of 80 years ago, and the consequent planetary conflict that consumed the subsequent 15 years or so never was going to happen either.

18. Did I say that?
I said that the world economic system collapsed 80 years ago and as a consequence tens of millions died in the ensuing decades of chaos. In the late 20s plenty of fools were as naive as yourself, quite confident that the clowns in charge were not driving the bus off a cliff.

15. How will capitalism deal with the inevitable limits of growth?
when additional land, resources or sources of energy cannot not match the demand created by increased population a steady state economy is bound to arise.

Without mechanisms to curb the tendency of wealth to concentrate the the fallacy of a rising tide will be put to rest once and for all.

2. Is he suddenly a natural born citizen of the United States?
Just asking because it would be like asking if Hitler could be President over the neo-fascist hate-heads in this country.
There is no legitimate discussion except to give those that like to bash Chavez a forum to do so.

3. I think...
...given the conditions in Venezueala, he is doing a pretty good job there. Its easy to criticize someones choice of allies, when your own country, no matter what, does not have to fear actual starvation.

If he wants to run he can have my passport ;)

4. I don't think this was meant literally
It is just a metaphor to suggest what Chavez's programs might look like in the U.S.
