2. One of the things not mentioned in stories about this program
is that *many* people had their previous drug insurance (extra programs beyond their insurance - specifically for medications) cut off - because the Medicare program was in place. My mother was told one month (maybe one and a half) that her drug benefit program (extra cost on her insurance) was ENDING b/c of the new medicare program. Her only choice was to enroll or lose any drug benefits. I believe that she pays more now, then before the benefit. Mostly because some medications are not covered. In the first year she didn't hit the donought hole - but as she ages - she is more likely to do so. Fortunately for her - due to years of saving and living far beyond her means (depression era kids - both my parents - strongly impacted their saving and spending habits - so she has a nest egg) - she will be able to absorb the costs. But many cannot.

She changed plans in the short window allowed - but it took a lot of research and a really good local pharmacy to help her get the info and compare the info in order to find it. Not all have the time/resources for the research or access to a great pharmacy (folks willing to lose her business to help her find a better deal that at first appeared to exclude that pharmacy from then providing the meds/getting the business.)

This program really needs reform. I hope that many more chime in on this thread, keep it kicked and recommend it. Folks who are hit by this program, their children (my case) and their grand children.
