Woman Says ''Pro-Life'' Repuke Candidate Paid For Her Abortion
Oregon City woman details abortion, relationship with Mike Erickson
Now a "pro-life" congressional candidate, he gave her $300 and took her to the clinic in Northeast Portland, Tawnya says

The Oregonian
JANIE HAR and STEVE MAYES
Monday, June 23, 2008

An Oregon City woman who dated congressional candidate Mike Erickson seven years ago said she asked him directly whether he wanted to have a baby. He shook his head no, she said, and paid for her abortion. In interviews with The Oregonian, the woman said she met Erickson in September 2000, and she had the abortion in January 2001. They saw each other afterward, she said, even going on a trip to Mexico in March, before the relationship ended. She spoke on the condition that only her first name, Tawnya, be used.

Her story is backed up by medical and other records, and the accounts of two friends, one of whom was with her at the abortion. Their story conflicts directly with Erickson's version. He agrees that he gave Tawnya $300 for medical help, and a ride to a doctor's office near Lloyd Center, but said he didn't know she was pregnant or planned to get an abortion. He said he doesn't think he saw her again after that day.

Erickson, a Lake Oswego businessman, is the Republican candidate for the 5th Congressional District and is running on a "pro-life" platform. The charge that he provided money to Tawnya nearly derailed his campaign for the May 20 primary and could hobble his chances in the Nov. 4 general election against state Sen. Kurt Schrader, D-Canby.

Tawnya, now 34, recalled sitting with Erickson in his new Mercedes that January, parked across from the abortion clinic. "I was bawling so hard I couldn't speak. He looked so sad. He looked like he cared," she said. "I asked him, 'Are you sure you don't want a baby?' " she said. "He shook his head. I opened the door, got out bawling and crossed the street and walked up to the clinic." Erickson, 45, said he dated Tawnya "for a couple of months." He told The Oregonian he didn't remember many details about their relationship, including where they met or when they dated. He said she betrayed no emotion during the car ride.

"Did I pay for an abortion? Absolutely not," Erickson said.

4. "The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion" - When the Anti-Choice Choose

This is an important read:

Abortion is a highly personal decision that many women are sure they'll never have to think about until they're suddenly faced with an unexpected pregnancy. But this can happen to anyone, including women who are strongly anti-choice. So what does an anti-choice woman do when she experiences an unwanted pregnancy herself? Often, she will grin and bear it, so to speak, but frequently, she opts for the solution she would deny to other women -- abortion.

In the spring of 2000, I collected the following anecdotes directly from abortion doctors and other clinic staff in North America, Australia, and Europe. The stories are presented in the providers' own words, with minor editing for grammar, clarity, and brevity. Names have been omitted to protect privacy.

...

"I've had several cases over the years in which the anti-abortion patient had rationalized in one way or another that her case was the only exception, but the one that really made an impression was the college senior who was the president of her campus Right-to-Life organization, meaning that she had worked very hard in that organization for several years. As I was completing her procedure, I asked what she planned to do about her high office in the RTL organization. Her response was a wide-eyed, 'You're not going to tell them, are you!?' When assured that I was not, she breathed a sigh of relief, explaining how important that position was to her and how she wouldn't want this to interfere with it." (Physician, Texas)

...

"We have anti-choice women in for abortions all the time. Many of them are just naive and ignorant until they find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy. Many of them are not malicious. They just haven't given it the proper amount of thought until it completely affects them. They can be judgmental about their friends, family, and other women. Then suddenly they become pregnant. Suddenly they see the truth. That it should only be their own choice. Unfortunately, many also think that somehow they are different than everyone else and they deserve to have an abortion, while no one else does." (Physician, Washington State)

...

(and my favorite story)

Some anti-choice women who have abortions do make peace with their decision and even become pro-choice, or at least more forgiving of other women seeking abortions. A Louisiana patient who was anti-choice before her abortion, wrote a warm and grateful thank-you letter to the clinic, admitting that she had been a hypocrite:

"I never dreamed, in my wildest nightmares, that there would ever be a situation where I personally would choose such an act. Of course, we would each like to think that our reasons for a termination are the exception to the rule. But the bottom line is that you people spend your lives, reputations, careers and energy fighting for, maintaining, and providing an option that I needed, while I spent my energy lambasting you. Yet you still allowed me to make use of your services even though I had been one of your enemies. You treated us as kindly and warmly as you did all of your patients and never once pointed an 'I told you so' finger in our direction. I got the impression that you cared equally about each woman in the facility and what each woman was going through, regardless of her reasons for choosing the procedure. I have never met a group of purely non-judgmental people like yourselves."

9. They're pro-American fetus not pro-life
I used to say they were pro-fetus but since Michel Reagan's idea to put bombs up middle-eastern babies butts and blow them up went over quite well with the right wing in this country I decided there was a need to add American to their title.

Here's an excerpt from PeaceNikki's intriguing article above:

"The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion"
When the Anti-Choice Choose

A 1994/95 survey (2,3) of nearly 10,000 abortion patients showed 18% of women having abortions are born-again or Evangelical Christians. Many of these women are likely anti-choice. The survey also showed that Catholic women have an abortion rate 29% higher than Protestant women. A Planned Parenthood handbook on abortion notes that nearly half of all abortions are for women who describe themselves as born-again Christian, Evangelical Christian, or Catholic. (4)

12. I love it...
Repuke family values at it's best. For seven years my wife taught at a very wealthy Catholic School (very heavily Republican). In her second year she became pregnant with our first child. At hearing the news, the principal backed her into a corner to tell her that she had no right to get pregnant, it was going to cost the school serious money to pay for a sub during her six weeks of paid leave with the baby. So much for family values when money or power or prestige gets in the way.

18. You do have to give them credit.....
...for consistency. Always true to form. The principal at your wife's school also ran up against this money crunch:

".... Catholic schools have been closing since their peak in the 1960s, when there were 12,893 schools with about 5.25 million students. Today, there are 7,378 schools with 2.27 million students. The decline in enrollment is accelerating, fueling further school closures. The recent economic downturn is being blamed for some of them, but McDonald said dioceses' huge payouts to settle sex abuse lawsuits could have played a role too.

"I don't think I did," he said. "I don't believe I did."

I know. You remember them ALL. Guys ALWAYS remember the ones that say yes! :P

- OT: I must tell you that I've always loved your moniker. When I see it, it reminds me of daze gone by in the 50s and 60s when I was a kid, and I watched old musical movies in black and white. That was back when romance seemed like it was attainable, and all you had to do was to know how to sing!

26. I can give you details and maps from memory.
But that isn't what a gentleman does.

Nor is this farce, BY this farce.

My good fellow DeSwiss, thank you. The story has behind it has been told often, but telling it will always be a joy.

I'm a refugee from the DALnet on mIRC chat and in a room of 500 people I became a regular as Verbal^Kent and eventually, just kent. So as a hobby and to keep the mods on their toes, I used to sneak into the channel under a a number of names: Lew^Nuttick, Al^Terigo, Art`Kryttyk, Harvey^Dareyett, etc etc. It became known as Spot The Kent.

One day I joined as SalmanChantedEvening, and the owner of the channel was in hysterics for a good half hour over it.

She's a remarkable, intelligent, funny, computer-savvy woman with an amazing mind, and when I joined DU and began to fade out of mIRC, I used this nick in her honor.

I never tire of the giggles it inspires. :)

27. It's a long-established conservative tradition
Even your president has indulged in it.

In the winter of 1971 George W. Bush was dating a woman named Robin Lowman (now Robin Garner). Miss Lowman became pregnant by Smirk and he arranged for her to have an abortion - which in the great state of Texas in 1971 was very illegal! Not to mention that George W. is running as a pro-life candidate for the presidency.

The unnamed source of this story, was a friend of Robin Lowman's and the girlfriend of the man who arranged the abortion. His name is Robert Carl Chandler. Chandler is a Bush friend and supporter from way back and he made the arrangements for Miss Lowman's abortion at the Twelve Oaks Hospital in Houston, TX (now the Bayou City Medical Center). The source overheard the call by Mr. Chandler to arrange the abortion and the source visited Robin Lowman at the Twelve Oaks Hospital after the procedure.

The source meanwhile, is afraid of coming forward, saying that she was threatened by Chandler and another Bush friend and supporter named Jim Bath. Bath has longstanding intelligence connections, and played a role in the BCCI scandal. Robin Lowman (now Garner) is married to Jerry Lee Garner who is an FBI agent.

So, that's the story : an illegal back room abortion arranged by the Republican party Presidential candidate who is running on a pro-life ticket.
