1. If they're dumb enough to live where there are ice storms, why
should the government help them????

They should just move.

3. of course not -- because they must have done something wrong
Edited on Tue Mar-06-07 08:54 PM by Lisa
Only bad people are punished with natural disasters, right? Giving them federal handouts is only encouraging them in their wicked ways. And the fact that these folks were not surrounded by swarms of friends and well-wishers with limitless resources who made everything as good as new, is proof that there must be something wrong with them. Because, as Dear Leader himself put it, the best help anyone can get is from the neighbors -- never mind the federal government! (Of course, the fact that in a disaster, the neighbors themselves will probably have their own troubles to deal with, is conveniently overlooked.)

4. We live smack in the middle of that particular storm. No power for 3 weeks.
But we have 2 generators and so weren't in any danger, or even majorly inconvenienced - but we burned a lot of gasoline making electricity and loaned one to our elderly neighbor while the power was out and we're still, a month later, helping others clean up the debris. Most of the folks out here in our lakeside community have extended a helping hand but there are some things we don't have the ability to do, such as repairing broken roofs and smashed cars. As I mentioned it was a far cry from the tragedy of NOLA and wouldn't presume to claim equivalence but it's just part of
an unfortunate pattern, it seems to me. For what "we" are spending for the Iraq occupation in just one day, every one of these victims could have gotten their damage repaired.

6. or tornado strike victims in states with Dem Govs
see current threads per Arkansas. Only if the story has enough human interest to be broadcast across the country - and to become a photo op for the pres - does serious FEMA help get engaged. And even then (per New Orleans) most of it is decoration rather than actual aid for regular folks.
