Note to Bush. Please pardon Libby.
Please make this about you instead of about him. Please?

3. Heck yeah. If for no other reason
pardon him because he wrote such a wonderful family novel! And use that as your official explanation. "We pardon Scooter Libby for his crimes because of the wonderful contributions to American literature he has made."

If there is to be a pardon, it will not occur until the last few days of President Bush's tenure.

However...I would love for Bush to pardon him tonight.

4. Oh yeah, that's already in ink, in the safe, waiting for the signature. Although...
Bush could sign it a little earlier if Congress does start investigating...

6. He should've just pre-pardoned him, like he did for Haliburton
and the other Iraq contractors. By executive order.

8. I don't doubt it. And, in some sense, it's his prerogative. Don't most Presidents
practically turn into pardon-machines in the last few days of office?

9. Yes, they do.
It's an old hangover from the days of kings. Kings in medieval Europe were supposed to be the law, and the justice system. If you could not get justice from the local lord or mayor or sheriff, you could appeal to the king, and he had the final word on justice. He could pardon you for a crime, decide that you had been wronged by someone and order them to pay redress, etc. So the president was granted the power of pardon, mostly because that's what people thought of leaders as doing.

It works well enough in some cases, as when Carter pardoned those who had fled the draft during Viet Nam. But it has worked to keep presidents out of jail in a few cases. Ford pardoned Nixon, Bush Daddy pardoned a whole slew of people who were being investigated over the Iran-Contra crimes--thus preventing them from being forced to testify against Bush and Reagan, thus keeping both Bush and Reagan out of jail.

11. Didn't kill the GOP when Bush Daddy did it.
He pardoned those set to testify against him over Iran-Contra, thus saving his own ass (and Reagan's) from prison. Some of the very people pardoned became Bush Baby employees, and the GOP recovered nicely. By the time W pardons Libby, no one but us will even remember him.
