although I know she is in the country category. She has stood up before for things she believed in and I wish she had came out earlier on this one, but better late than never I guess. She's GREAT!!!

We provided a venue for her here in California about 4 or 5 years ago. She showed up with an upright acoustic bass player -- that's it - no guitar, no piano, just acoustic bass and her voice and personality and she tore the house up!!!

Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are somewhat outspoken Democrats. Merle Haggard has endorsed Hillary, and is a big opponent of Bush and the Iraq invasion. Willie Nelson is liberal. Even Toby Keith is a Democrat, though not a liberal Democrat. He campaigned for Bill Richardson (close friend of his) and the governor of Oklahoma.

Other Dems in country music: Nanci Griffith, Hal Ketchum, Emmylou Harris, Pam Tillis, Trisha Yearwood (it's rumored Garth is, too), Tish Hinojosa. Notice the more talented ones, in general, tend to be more liberal.

A lot of Country singers are quiet about their politics because their fan base is at odds with them, so they don't want to inflame their audience.

I grew up in a home with all types of music played, and I have continued to appreciate music from many different avenues through out my life. I love it! But I bet it won't get played on country radio. And they are the ones who most need to hear it. But here kind of music (literate, intelligent music, country or otherwise) does not get played on mainstream radio anymore. Hopefully plenty of airplay on Sirius and XM.

For many years, she has been my favorite songwriter. I can't explain it exactly but I think her songs express just exactly what I wish I could say. It just hits me where I live unlike most everything else out there.

54. Chapin was a friend of mine when she went to Brown University

and she had strong leanings to the left even back then.

Her family lived in a huge house in Georgetown and she went by the name Chapin. When daddy called in a favor to get her in with one of country music's biggest producers the guy signed her, but advised her to avoid mentioning her privileged background and start using Mary Chapin as her stage name.

I remember watching her do bad covers (her voice was already great but she was strictly a 3 chord strummer)of Joni Mitchell songs at the Grad Center Bar at Brown to an audience of about 20 people when I first met her. Another friend (Paul Mellyn) was the one who encouraged her to start writing country stuff and taught her country and bluegrass picking.

Glad to see she's gone so far.
