Things Are Good.
Edited on Tue Mar-06-07 04:28 PM by H2O Man
"Libby had three formal titles. He was chief of staff to Vice President Cheney; he was also national security advisor to the vice president; and he was finally an assistant to President Bush. It was a trifecta of positions probably never before held by a single person. Scooter was a power center unto himself, and accordingly, a force multiplier for Cheney's agenda and views."
-- Plan of Attack; Bob Woodward; page 48

"The man attacking my integrity and reputation -- and, I believe, quite possibly the person who exposed my wife's identity -- was the same Scooter Libby who .... also participated in the preparation of the Project for the New American Century's seminal document, 'Rebuilding American Defenses,' which became the neoconservative blueprint for national security policy, much of which has been implemented in the aftermath of 9/11. This ardent neoconservative is a leading participant in the network of hidden cells that funneled so much disinformation to our political decision makers outside normal channels. He is one of a handful of senior officials in the administration with both the means and the motive to conduct a covert inquiry that allowed the White House to learn my wife's name and status, and then disclose that information to the press."
-- The Politics of Truth; Joseph Wilson; pages 442-443

Scooter Libby now a convicted criminal.

A White House spokesperson stated that President Bush watched the coverage of the verdict.MSNBC reported that a motorcade that they believed may have included VP Dick Cheney drove past the court house, moments after the verdict was announced.

A growing number of people are saying that Congress should begin an investigation of the Plame scandal, as it relates to the lies that brought this nation to war in Iraq.

The Wilsons' civil case will move foreward. Please consider sending a contribution, if you can afford even a couple of dollars, to: The Joseph & Valerie Wilson Legal Support Trust; PO Box 40918; Washington, DC 20016-0918.

And DU continues to be the best place to discuss the Plame scandal!

18. If you look
past the trestle, to the left, there is a small cemetery. When this railroad was constructed, just after the Civil War, a group of the Irish immigrants died in one of the "camps" nearby. The people of the local communities did not want any Irish Catholics buried inside their cemetery, so they were buried in an unmarked grave along the bank.

The railroad is long gone, and very few people ever visit the cemetery. The names of those railroad workers are lost. A few people have asked me to take them to find the cemetery in the past decade, but it's usually just my family and I.

36. I took one
of the top railroad historians in the country there a few years back. He was saying how sad the spot was. I asked him why? He said because they died such a lonely death, then were disrespected, and that their families had likely never have known what became of them. I thought that was impressive, that he really understood the power of that spot.

We sat there for a long time, quietly, and watched two of my children playing as children do. And I said that it was also a pleasant spot, because we were there that day, remembering and respecting them. He said that it was a shame that there weren't any photos of the immigrants who had worked in that area. And so I shared some with him. Now, years later, I get a nice photo from him.

Below is one of the Irish stone cutters:

93. Yes, I am
looking through a number of my old books for some new ideas for St. Patrick's Day.

Last night, after I had posted the railroad photo, another historian sent me a newspaper article from the time shortly after the workers were buried in the unmarked, mass grave. Lots of tensions between the Irish Catholic immigrants and the local population.

95. In 1960
one of my cousins was the head of the JFK headquarters in Norwich, NY. In a period of one month, he was given 5 traffic tickets by the local police. In over 65 years of driving, those are the only 5 tickts he ever was issued. And it was the only time he was threatened by thugs for his political activism.

96. I am a bit surprised, I would have thought there are enough Irish cops on any
police force to check that kind of crapola.

Was it a town owned by the repugs? Or anti Catholic? In those days if you recall, there was much hysteria over JFK being Catholic. And how the pope would be running the WH, etc.

My people are from Boston MA, an Irish town, so not as used to the kind of stuff you describe. Also they were late comers, did not come over from Ireland til about 1918. So missed the 19th century discrimination.

4. I hope so. But I get a sinking feeling when I watch the goings-on today
and see that Fitz seems ready to close shop and go back to his "day job," unless libby decides to sing a little more for him (which I doubt is likely). So there the investigation ends? Are we left having to rely on hopes that the Dems will crank up an investigation into this? I don't know. I went from elated to dejected in a very short time. Chris Matthews is starting to connect quite a few of the dots, regarding libby and the convictions, the vendetta against critics, the fraudulent case for war, the war itself that has cost at least three thousand American lives, AND the war itself that has also cost tens of thousands of horrible, life-long injuries that landed quite a few unfortunate soldiers in Walter Reed's now-infamous Building 18. He also has commented at length about cheney's involvement.

I mean, it sure seems clear to me. But if I hold my breath waiting for the Dems to do something about it, I think I'll die of suffocation.

15. Scooter has finally caught the WHANGDEPOOTENAWAH!
Edited on Tue Mar-06-07 04:49 PM by TacticalPeek
WHANGDEPOOTENAWAH, n.

In the Ojibwa tongue, disaster; an unexpected affliction that strikes hard.

Should you ask me whence this laughter,
Whence this audible big-smiling,
With its labial extension,
With its maxillar distortion
And its diaphragmic rhythmus
Like the billowing of an ocean,
Like the shaking of a carpet,
I should answer, I should tell you:
From the great deeps of the spirit,
From the unplummeted abysmus
Of the soul this laughter welleth
As the fountain, the gug-guggle,
Like the river from the canon ,
To entoken and give warning
That my present mood is sunny.
Should you ask me further question --
Why the great deeps of the spirit,
Why the unplummeted abysmus
Of the soule extrudes this laughter,
This all audible big-smiling,
I should answer, I should tell you
With a white heart, tumpitumpy,
With a true tongue, honest Injun:
Scooter Libby, he has Caught It,
Caught the Whangdepootenawah!

Is't the sandhill crane, the shankank,
Standing in the marsh, the kneedeep,
Standing silent in the kneedeep
With his wing-tips crossed behind him
And his neck close-reefed before him,
With his bill, his william, buried
In the down upon his bosom,
With his head retracted inly,
While his shoulders overlook it?
Does the sandhill crane, the shankank,
Shiver grayly in the north wind,
Wishing he had died when little,
As the sparrow, the chipchip, does?
No 'tis not the Shankank standing,
Standing in the gray and dismal
Marsh, the gray and dismal kneedeep.
No, 'tis peerless Scooter Libby
Realizing that he's Caught It,
Caught the Whangdepootenawah!

BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

(apologies to Ambrose Bierce)

16. Scooter's blues
Great graphic!

I hear the train a comin´
it´s rolling round the bend
and I ain´t seen the sunshine since I don´t know when,
I´m stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin´ on
but that train keeps a rollin´ on down to San Anton..
When I was just a baby my mama told me. Son,
always be a good boy, don´t ever play with NEOCONS.
But I OUTED A COVERT AGENT JUST TO COVER UP THEIR LIES
now every time I hear that whistle I hang my head and cry..

I bet there´s rich folks eating in a fancy dining car
they´re probably drinkin´ coffee and smoking big cigars.
Well I know I had it coming, I know I can´t be free
but those people keep a movin´
and that´s what tortures me...

Well if they´d free me from this prison,
if that railroad train was mine
I bet I´d move just a little further down the line
far from Folsom prison, that's where I want to stay
and I´d let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away.....

22. Things Are Not Good
Sorry, but I don't share your upbeat attitude.

Sure, I'm glad that the jury did their jobs well and convicted Libby on 4 charges. But really, that's about the best we could hope for. If you look at it from this point of view, then I suppose it's ok to say that things went well, given the circumstances.

But.....SO WHAT? Libby is still free to go about his life as if nothing happened. Wounded perhaps, but yet very much alive and with plenty of nutcase supporters willing to give him all the money and support he needs to continue his fruitless attempts at vindication.

In the end, the process will get dragged out into 2008, and I imagine it unsure whether he'll even serve a day of jailtime before being pardonned by Her' Shrub.

And NOBODY ELSE gets punished. Wasn't that their whole plan all along? Make Libby the sacraficial lamb? MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! Everyone else skates, and in about 20 months, Libby skates as well. Fitz packs up and goes home. Congress? LOL!! Reid will make stupid statements asking George not to pardon Scooter. I'm sure that will get very far, since King george Always listens to suggestions from the Democrats in Congress.

So, I'm glad Libby was convicted, and it could have been worse. But in the end, there was little gained by this, and the criminals guilty of the most egregious crimes are still laughing openly at the process, and how they managed to get away with their high crimes and misdemeanors, while suffering a minor infraction on their way to the Happy Place.

37. I'm A Clown, Eh?
Just because I see that there is no accountability for the true crimes which were committed?

Beyond what happened today, what consequences do you think there will be? Truly, knowing what these criminals have done, what penalties will the endure?

Does anybody really believe Shrub won't pardon Libby before he leaves office? Does anybody really believe that Libby might not serve a single day of jail time? Does anybody believe that Fitz is going to get some sort of plea bargain? Does anybody think that Dick & Rover aren't relieved that this is ending without them being charged?

Anyways, go back to your happy dances. I'm not trying to rain on the parade, but I'm just not able to see any reprecussions for these criminals given the fact Fitz appears to be wrapping things up, and Libby is 20 months and several appeals removed from his eventual pardon.

And the funniest thing of all, is Harry Reid "asking" the "president" to not pardon Libby. If he had any guts he'd laugh while he was asking that, because if he actually thinks "the decider" gives 2 shits, then he's on drugs.

If you think nothing is gained, then you haven't been paying attention. You have no clue whatsoever what the future holds or what will happen. All you have are your meaningless opinions about what YOU think will happen. You're welcome to them. I suggest you just give up, dig a hole, get in it and whine for the rest of Bush's term since it's all so meaningless anyway.

The rest of us will be happy that today justice was served and we will have hope that this small step for justice today will leade to bigger steps for justice tomorrow. But you go ahead and whine and gnash your teeth at the meaningless of it all. I for one enjoy laughing at clowns.

Insulting the great H20Man in his own post was not wise.

Whatever....I never said there was NOTHING gained from today's events. I merely said that in the scheme of things, it was mere pissing in the wind. A slap on the wrist for the criminals STILL in power, while you sit here and post about how worried they are about their vulnerability.

Go ahead and continue your partying. I've seen it all before, especially here at DU. It happens every time. Yet, in the reality based world, nothing ever comes of it. I'm sure this time will be completely different though, and all those guilty are shaking in their boots about how well things are going for our side.

Call me when one of them actually serves jail time or has their life ruined in a substantial way because of their actions. I'm eager for that day.

unless it's because there's a parade going on and you look like a big grey cloud. Not good timing given that many of us are celebrating H2O man who has done an excellent job here at DU keeping us all informed.

But you're probably right in the final analysis.

While now is probably not the best time to make a list of all the criminals who now hold public office -- it might be a good idea at some point to post the details once the parade is over. A criminal record doesn't seem to stop folks from working in government these days. Seems like I remember that there are more criminals in the Bush admin than in any time in history.

Right now I'm happy to see the guilty verdict -- it takes the edge off of the despair many of us are feeling.

32. Question about an "inactive" investigation.
Could we have a reverse Iran/Contra situation, where Congress under Waxman's lead could have Libby testify under immunity to avoid further prosecution? I remember Oliver North had some convictions overturned because his Congressional testimony given under a grant of immunity was used indirectly in his trial. That can't happen with Scooter.

I guess my question is, since he has been convicted already, can he still be compelled by Congress to testify? Could he get an immunity deal through Congress to spill the beans on higher-ups, or can he only do that through Fitz?

39. Well, that's a great
question. That's very important.

At this point, the person that Congress needs to focus on is VP Cheney. I am sure that others, like Rove, were guilty of criminal behavior. And there were others who were not as high profile as Karl, who really should have been prosecuted.

But the single most important thing at this time is for Congress to have the courage to take on the "shadow government." That means investigate and impeach Cheney. It is possible that would require that others at the lower levels be granted a pass on their criminal behavior.

It is, as you so very well know, another criminal case that is also very important, which we need to concentrate on: the neocon/AIPAC espionage case. It is closely related.

I only ever think of one thing when I see "shadow government:"

I have an unverifiable second- or third-hand account of Bill Clinton saying the following while speaking at what was probably a fundraising dinner:

"There is a government within the government and I am not in charge."

65. Congress can grant immunity but not pardons
They would have to threaten Scooter with something else -- he can still be charged with violation of the IIPA -- in order to grant him immunity. The perjury and OOJ charges likely don't present double-jeopardy issues.

Keep in mind, also, that if Scooter is pardoned by Bush, he might be fair game for any Grand Jury or Committee which wants to call him. He can't claim the Fifth if he's pardoned.

All this is a legal mine field, and I don't think there are easy answers.

99. And Scooter can't plead the 5th if he's been pardoned
That's got me wondering if the cabal can *afford* to pardon him. Since he's been convicted, you'd think he couldn't plead the 5th regardless, but since he can try and appeal endlessly, I would guess he has a constitutional right to protect his own ass as long as he can.

But if Shrub pardons him, what's to stop Congress from compelling his testimony, in an investigation of Darth and Dumb? There's a bunch of evidence in the public record from the trial to keep him from trying to lie to their faces, and since he can't protect his own ass if it has already been pardoned, Congress can compel him to tell the truth, or lock him up until he does.

If you ask me, letting Scooter walk is a small price to pay for hanging his bosses from the highest tree.

Even without a pardon, I still want to see Scooter and everyone that Fitz put on the stand tell their side of things on C-SPAN. 'Course, now I'm getting nostalgic about the "good ol' days." Watergate hearings live, gavel to gavel, without commercial interruptions, on all three networks, all day, every day. Day after day. Week after week. Dean, laying out all the gory details. Haldeman and Ehrlichman squirming and lying and pleading the fifth. And all of America and the world with their eyeballs glued to it.

Today, I fear, the only way most people will even know who Scooter Libby is is if he tries out for American Idol!

But, hey, no downers, for now, let's cue U2, "It's a Beautiful Day..."

:headbang:

And then get on the phone to our pals on the Hill...

What do we want? IMPEACHMENT!

When do we want it? NOW!

44. This isn't a small victory.
This was a huge step forward. When we look at the job description that Woodward gives, and add the information from Wilson, it is clear that Scooter Libby was one of the most powerful figures in the country. And even with all the power that the neoconservatives and the OVP/OSP had -- even after they were sure they had "rolled the earthmovers in over this one" -- I. Lewis Libby is now a convicted criminal.

We still have a lot of work to do, of course, but we should view this trial as a major victory.

70. Yep.
While he is clearly better known, Rove was no where near as important a target. Where Libby was a powerful neoconservative who operated out of the shadows, and one of the planners of their Middle East policy for a long, long time, Rove has had only a minor role in creating foreign policy. He has, of course, helped sell the administration's lies to the public.

Cheney is the person we should demand Congress investigate and impeach. Many journalists have said Scooter was the "firewall" protecting the VP -- and that firewall was knocked down today. Opportunity knocks.

As happy as I am I am still very saddened by the fact that one of the highest official(s) outed a CIA agent, her network and who knows how many people have died from this.

Someone needs to ask Bush and Cheney how did this make Americans safer especially in regards to Nuclear proliferation in the middle east.

A happy but sad day.

I still think more people need to PAY and if it is with their lives so be it, cause who knows how many lives they have taken with their arrogance.

I am getting more and more mad as I sit here and think about it.

56. I just read this piece by Michael Tomasky
on the libby verdict and was reminded what bob woodward had to say about Patrick Fitzgerald..

"Second, the verdict vindicates the prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald. Mountains of calumny have been heaped on him by the right since he brought the indictment against Libby. Conservatives were waiting for an acquittal to pounce on Fitzgerald, on Wilson, on Plame - and on Democrats and liberals generally for having made a federal case out of nothing. They would have used an acquittal to shut down all the talk about the manipulation of pre-war intelligence, which was Joe Wilson's initial accusation. And not only conservatives - a lot of the paragons of Washington morality (yes, an oxymoron) were waiting, too. Bob Woodward, who used to be a great investigative reporter, once called Fitzgerald a "junkyard dog prosecutor". Can't be said now."

Much more..

from the Joe Wilson press conference today:

Q: Who would you like to see play you and Valerie in the movie?

JW: I have no opinion; that's a decision to be made by others. I think this makes for a very interesting story, especially in light of the many generations of people who fought for our country to protect the legacy handed down to us by our forefathers. We did not expect to be in the middle of this. I got in because I felt I had something to offer re: Iraq due to my experience there and also because it is an act of good citizenship to hold the government accountable. I would ask that Jack Black be in a role other than that of Joe Wilson.

83. There's a Slow Train Coming ...
Slow Train

Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can't help but wonder what's happenin' to my companions,
Are they lost or are they found, have they counted the cost it'll take to bring
down
All their earthly principles they're gonna have to abandon?
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

I had a woman down in Alabama,
She was a backwoods girl, but she sure was realistic,
She said, "Boy, without a doubt, have to quit your mess and straighten out,
You could die down here, be just another accident statistic."
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

All that foreign oil controlling American soil,
Look around you, it's just bound to make you embarrassed.
Sheiks walkin' around like kings, wearing fancy jewels and nose rings,
Deciding America's future from Amsterdam and to Paris
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Man's ego is inflated, his laws are outdated, they don't apply no more,
You can't rely no more to be standin' around waitin'
In the home of the brave, Jefferson turnin' over in his grave,
Fools glorifying themselves, trying to manipulate Satan
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Big-time negotiators, false healers and woman haters,
Masters of the bluff and masters of the proposition
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency,
All non-believers and men stealers talkin' in the name of religion
And there's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

People starving and thirsting, grain elevators are bursting
Oh, you know it costs more to store the food than it do to give it.
They say lose your inhibitions, follow your own ambitions,
They talk about a life of brotherly love, show me someone who knows how to
live it. There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

Well, my baby went to Illinois with some bad-talkin' boy she could destroy
A real suicide case, but there was nothin' I could do to stop it,
I don't care about economy, I don't care about astronomy
But it sure do bother me to see my loved ones turning into puppets,
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

- Robert Zimmerman, '79
