What do you think would happen if Bush actually invaded Iran . . . ???
According to the Sy Hersh reports the chances are increasing that this could happen --

Maybe it's more likely that the attack would come from Israel --- ??

Maybe it's more likely that it will be disguised as an attack on the US --- ???

and do you think that the Democrats would support this war as they supported

the war in Iraq --- or was that because it was being connected to 9/11---???

Maybe this should be a poll --- ?

And . . . maybe . . how seriously do you take the reports that it's imminent -

pre-election --- ???

8. I sincerely doubt he'll invade
because he thinks he can launch a few bombs at their nuclear plants and he'll come out looking like a hero. Or he thinks that he can rig it so the Israelis do the bombing and leave his hands clean.

Unfortunately, what he's not counting on are the Iranian troops that have been massed at the border for the last 5 years boiling over into Iraq and slaughtering any American (or anybody dressed in western clothing) that they can find.

He's also not counting on a world wide trade embargo, something that could easily happen by a world fed up enough with his constant insistence on starting Armageddon so he can knock Jebus off his heavenly throne to come down here and rescue the rich (naturally) that it's willing to forgo its own profit in the short term. He is counting on an oil embargo, which is why he's stuffed the strategic reserve for the past couple of years.

This could spin stunningly out of control very, very quickly. He is a madman to consider it.

9. They won't invade.
They'll bomb the crap out of a large number of military/government targets. They are geniuses at creating unintended consequences—the most obvious (if you're not an idiot) and immediate would be an all-out uprising by the Shi'a militias in Iraq, including mass attacks on the Green Zone. You'd also have the Iranian army coming across the border to attack U.S. troops, unless they'd all been wiped out by airstrikes. And yeah, the price of gas would go up to $6-10 pretty much overnight. You'd also see some pretty devastating atacks on U.S. warships in the Gulf, most likely--it's all been war-gamed to death, and in every scenario the U.S. loses the naval battle to swarms of bomb-laden Zodiacs and other small vessels, a la the U.S.S. Cole bombing. They think they've got it covered, but they don't.

11. Invade with what army?
Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 02:18 PM by Old and In the Way
The 101ST American Keyboarding Expeditionary Force, commanded by Col. John Bolton? The only possible attack mode is from the air...and I think we'd probably meet our economic and military Waterloo there if the war-profiteering braintrust attempts such a stupid and unprovoked attack.

Of course, if you've already committed war crimes against humanity, there's not a lot of downside risk to carry out another attack, hoping that you can transition into a dictatorship to avoid your accountability for past crimes...

13. I'm not one who thinks that all our problems are caused by a small group of rogue
WH officials. They have a lot of behind the scenes support from power brokers in every corner of the USA, including dem ones. If Bush invades Iran, it will be because there are enough powerful and rich people who support it and because Bush/Cheney have charted a path for the aftermath...and it doesn't include impeachment, revolution, jailtime, or humiliation.

I think an invasion would be a complete mess...disastrous and tragic...and the nation will go along for the ride just like it has for eight years. But in the end it will benefit the ruling elite.

Invaded means boots on the ground in a major way. We don't have the manpower to invade.

At most, attack with small unit incursions of special forces.

And I will be surprised if we get through the end of Bush's term without attacking Iran.

17. There are two things that will prevent Bush from attacking Iran
1. Not enough troops.

2. Not enough money.

Our military is already spread too thin and worn out from Iraq. There just aren't enough to go around for another war.

Where will the money come from? China isn't going to be too thrilled to loan us more money, based on what we already owe them and our falling dollar.

I just don't see it happening, but almost nothing this gang of criminals does is a huge surprise now. In fact, I'm still surprised at what they're getting away with without being confronted about it.

and will not shy away from the fight like the iraqi had a tendency to do. The straits of hormuz will be running red with american blood is what would happen early on then like I said all bets would be off. China and Russia have both indicated that they will not set idly by and watch bushco invade yet another country especially Iran. It'll be war like none of us has ever witnessed before, even to us who have.

Everyone said they they wouldn't dare invade Iraq. Wrong.

They'll do it, lots of people will die, nukes will fly...the only debatable point is how far this will all go.

Would Putin nuke the US into the stone age? Would China use their insanely large army to invade us? Will it just be business as usual?

I hope you brought your shades- this is gonna be one HELL of a fireworks show.

32. The scary part is that many religious people seriously believe...

in an end times conflict involving Israel. This may well be a self-fulfilling prophesy.

We might shortly see a another conflict driven by religion.

The Shiite faith believes in a "12th Imam" who will return at the end of times

Remarkably, the 12th Imam theory plays heavily into the world’s current concerns with Iran. The Shiite Muslim President of Iran, Ahmadinejad, is deeply committed to the Islamic Messiah, al Mahdi. There have been many through the years claiming to be the Hidden Imam but Ahmadinejad believes he is yet to come. He claims that he is to personally prepare the world for the coming Mahdi. In order to save the world, it must be in a state of chaos and subjugation. Ahmadinejad claims he was “directed by Allah to pave the way for the glorious appearance of the Mahdi”. This apocalyptic directive includes some very scary proclamations.

****snip***

The 12th Imam: Why Is This Especially Important Now?
While Christians look for Jesus’ 2nd coming, the Jews await the Messiah and Muslims await the 12th Imam. However, of the three, Allah’s designated Mahdi is the only one who demands a violent path to conquer the world. Mr. Ahmadinejad, and his cabinet, say they have a ‘signed contract’ with al Mahdi in which they pledge themselves to his work. What does this work involve? In light of concerns over Iran’s nuclear capabilities, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly stated Israel should be wiped off the map. He spoke to the United Nations in September ’05. During that speech he claims to have been in an aura of light and felt a change in the atmosphere during which time no one present could blink their eyes. Iran’s PM is also said to have spoken in apocalyptic terms and seems to relish conflict with the West whom he calls the Great Satan. This is while he proclaims he must prepare the world for the coming Mahdi by way of a world totally under Muslim control. He is working hard to bring about the world-wide horrors that must be in place for their al Mahdi to bring peace.

http://www.allaboutpopularissues.org/12th-imam.htm

And we have the evangelistic Christian view:

At the center of it all is Pastor John Hagee, a popular televangelist who leads the 18,000-member Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. While Hagee has long prophesized about the end times, he ratcheted up his rhetoric this year with the publication of his book, "Jerusalem Countdown," in which he argues that a confrontation with Iran is a necessary precondition for Armageddon and the Second Coming of Christ. In the best-selling book, Hagee insists that the United States must join Israel in a preemptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God's plan for both Israel and the West. Shortly after the book's publication, he launched Christians United for Israel (CUFI), which, as the Christian version of the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee, he said would cause "a political earthquake."

22. "attack" not "invade"
There are several scenarios I can see playing out but I think the most likely one is that Israel (prodded by the US) attacks Iran, Iran naturally retaliates. The Israeli attack is spun in the US media as "pre-emptive self-defence". It's also possible that some kind of covert action leads to the same thing or that the Iranians are provoked into doing something stupid.

Either way, the Iranian response will be portrayed by the corporate media as unwarranted or disproportionate, lots of talk will be made about supporting Israel (for various reasons, some understandable, others less so). Lots of talk about how terrible Iran and Ahmedinijad are (which they are but that's beside the point), probably quite a bit of rampant fantasy about Iran's nuclear weapons (a panicky public are easier to control). Then the US will attack Iran.

There almost certainly wouldn't be a formal declaration of war (which seems to have become obsolete these days) and I very much doubt there'd be a ground invasion. There aren't the troops or equipment to manage a ground invasion (barring a draft) but there are enough stockpiled bombs and, Satan be merciful, nukes to reduce Iran to a sea of rubble in a matter of days.

Iran busts CIA terror network
davidswanson ...

TEHRAN - The Intelligence Ministry on Saturday released details of the detection and dismantling of a terrorist network affiliated to the United States.

In a coordinated operation on May 7, Iranian intelligence agents arrested the terrorist network’s members, who were identified in Fars, Khuzestan, Gilan, West Azerbaijan, and Tehran provinces, the Intelligence Ministry announcement said.

The group’s plans were devised in the U.S., according to the announcement, which added that they had planned to carry out a number of acts such as bombing scientific, educational, and religious centers, shooting people, and making public places in various cities insecure.

One of the terrorists was killed in the operation, but the rest are in detention, the Intelligence Ministry said, adding that the group’s main objective was to create fear among the people.
