Evangelicals block showing of "Incovenient Truth" to Seattle public school children
Gore Film Sparks Parents' Anger
Showing 'Inconvenient Truth' Would Require Counterpoint

By Blaine Harden
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, January 25, 2007; Page A12

FEDERAL WAY, Wash., Jan. 24 -- Frosty E. Hardiman is neither impressed nor surprised that "An Inconvenient Truth," the global-warming movie narrated by former vice president Al Gore, received an Oscar nomination this week for best documentary. "Liberal left is all over Hollywood," he grumbled a few hours after the nomination was announced.

Hardiman, a parent of seven here in the southern suburbs of Seattle, has himself roiled the global-warming waters. It happened early this month when he learned that one of his daughters would be watching "An Inconvenient Truth" in her seventh-grade science class.

"No you will not teach or show that propagandist Al Gore video to my child, blaming our nation -- the greatest nation ever to exist on this planet -- for global warming," Hardiman wrote in an e-mail to the Federal Way School Board. The 43-year-old computer consultant is an evangelical Christian who says he believes that a warming planet is "one of the signs" of Jesus Christ's imminent return for Judgment Day.

His angry e-mail (along with complaints from a few other parents) stopped the film from being shown to Hardiman's daughter.

3. So, Mr. Hardiman is taking deliberate actions to set the stage for Armageddon?
That's exactly what the antichirst would do.

4. unbelievable
this is the same kind of backward logic that encouraged to Park Service at the Grand Canyon to sell books showing how the flood of Noah's Ark carved the Grand Canyon.

I wonder which one of the right wing pundits is trashing the film and calling it an attack by the "liberal left"? I sometimes try to listen, but I have a hard time stomaching all of the hatred and trash that they spew.

5. Oh Frosty, ye of little faith. Let the heathen show their demonic movie...
You and yours are secure enough in your faith that no amount of ungodly progaganda shall turn you from the truth.

8. That's precisely the problem w/ evangelicals
...they follow an extroverted doctrine, but true belief is internal and independent of all worldly influences.

Guys like Frosty are the American Taliban.

9. this has to be a joke....the guy disputing global warming is named frosty.....
it's like people named shoemaker becoming shoe makers or people named butcher opening delis. i heard a story on npr about this kind of thing several years ago. so, i guess it's not surprising that some dim-bulbed freeper named frosty becomes a global warming denier.

10. Would he find it "balanced" enough to show something pointing out
how breeding factories with seven children are consuming a higher percentage of the world's assets? Or maybe he'd be ok with Jesus Camp? Just keep your child out of the public schools and homeschool them if you don't like what the schools are teaching. Or let your child sit through the movie and discuss it at home to share what you think (which is what good parents do anyhow)

It's a shame your faith is so weak that you think God's return will be prevented if we stop polluting some how. Hell, if you really want to stuff your beliefs down everyone's throat, why don't you make a movie about how Jeebus divinely inspired Henry Ford specifically so that we'd be facing Global Warming now and how all those prophecies in the Bible are coming true. If you spend some time online, you'll quickly find out how to raise the money for such a holy project - here's a hint, start with the widows.

12. So by his logic, Jesus is creating global warming?
"No you will not teach or show that propagandist Al Gore video to my child, blaming our nation -- the greatest nation ever to exist on this planet -- for global warming," Hardiman wrote in an e-mail to the Federal Way School Board. The 43-year-old computer consultant is an evangelical Christian who says he believes that a warming planet is "one of the signs" of Jesus Christ's imminent return for Judgment Day."

Note, Frosty the Snowjob Man doesn't deny global warming exists, he simply sees it as a sign of Jesus' second coming. So if we're not the cause of GW and yet it's a sign, does that mean Jesus is responsible? That JC is preparing the way for his return by heating up the earth? Frosty would rather blame Jesus than man?

Got news for you, Frosty.... Jesus is coming and he's really pissed.

13. keep breeding, keep consuming, keep polluting
Just the way baby Jeezus would want.

The Fundies won't understand the peril the earth is in until it literally looks like the lunar landscape. This the the legacy they leave for not just their own children, but ours.

Fundies in Washington should be quarantined like the apple maggots. In my opinion, they're far more dangerous... and repulsive.

14. He doesn't want AMERICA to get the blame, he wants GOD to receive it?

Two really important points:

1. Mr. Hardiman believes in global warming

2. He blames it on God

Does he even realize he has said this?

15. Mad as he is, I'm afraid I think he's right.

The issue is not that the film talks about global warming, but that it's made by Al Gore, a man who may yet run again for president.

Showing a film by a (potential) presidential candidate in which he sets forward his views on something that will be a major campaign issue if he does run is not something schools should be doing.

If Newt Gingrich, say, made a perfectly good and apolitical video teaching children maths, in which Mr Gingrich himself prominently and positively featured, I would not want it shown in schools.

Global warming is a scientific, not a political, issue, and doesn't require a "counterpoint". "Al Gore talks about global warming", however, is inevitably political, and therefore does, if you show it at all, and any counterpoint is going to be along the lines of "global warming is untrue", which is false, and therefore shouldn't be shown in schools, so you can't show AIT either.

There are plenty of good educational materials on global warming not made by politicians.

16. "Parent of seven" -- this is why the neo-con nutters are taking over
Sane, sensible, intelligent people -- ie, liberals and progressives -- do not mindlessly reproduce.

It's almost like squirting out babies is the one and only thing they are capable of doing, and God bless 'em, they are going to do what they do best.

Political correctness run amok?

Is it so necessary to avoid angering anyone, that noone is permitted to speak the truth?

What happens when the Disciples of Frothenslosh declare that mathematics is the devil's instrument? Do we stop teaching kids addition and subtraction?
