Bush has learned that facts are stupid things
To the Editor:
In a recent letter, Charles Martin quoted Ronald Reagan as saying "Facts are stubborn things." In the interest of historical accuracy, this quote was written by John Adams in 1770. Reagan said, "Facts are stupid things." Sadly, this proved a core truth of his disastrous presidency.
The fact that the Constitution doesn't permit the president from breaking laws passed by Congress didn't stop the Gipper from turning Ollie North loose to ship illegal arms into Central America in an attempt to topple a legitimate government. The cost was tens of thousands of innocent civilians killed.
Obeying the law wasn't a priority for Reagan. One hundred thirty-eight of his appointees resigned under ethical clouds or were criminally indicted.
He assaulted environmental laws passed by Congress to protect Americans. He never met a greedy corporation that he didn't try to help out at the expense of public lands and public health. The national debt tripled under his watch.
