Has anyone else had trouble logging on to DU today?

or something that's hijacking your browser. Especially likely since it's not just DU.

16. First time I have been able to access DU today

is right now. I was trying to get here all morning but was unable. I did a tracert to see what the problem was and this is what I found.

The last router I was able to hit was 209.8.108.37. This IP is owned by a company named "Beyond The Network America" and is based in Herdon, VA. They have been known to setup bots that takedown sites by signing up a massive amount of users in a short period of time. Kind of like a DOS attack whereby the bots take up the resources of a site in order to shut it down or make it inaccessable.

I have no doubt that this is what they were doing to DU earlier this morning.

I hope the admins here at DU are aware that they were under attack this morning and I hope they take appropriate measures to ensure it does not happen again....as well as possibly getting "Beyond The Network America" to explain WTF they were doing.

each router that your connection to a website hits before it reaches the final destination, the website that you typed into the address bar.

Typically it returns IP address information for each router the route touches.


WilyWondr then did a "Whois" which will tell you information about a particular IP address such as who owns it, and contact information for the administrator.

spikes in I/O bytes and CPU.

29. I did, but

there were no IPs following the 209.8.108.37 IP. Everything timed out after that.

I also did a tracert from another location which ended at the IP 216.158.2.2. This is a company named Consult Dynamics out of Wilmington, DE. I was not able to find out much about that company, but neither of the locations I attempted to do the tracert from were able to reach DU. That is how I knew it was not just me having this problem.

The names and locations of the owners of both of these IPs was enough to tell me that something was going on. I am sure the servers were getting smashed by someone and the server logs will clearly show the IPs that were doing it. He has way better info being on the recieving end of the attack than I could ever provide him coming from the outside.
