They will have to prepare then - that documentary laid out how difficult the transition will be and how many mechanics, Jiffy Lubes, gas stations, etc. will go out of business.

Can we REALLY have a low-maintenance car that doesn't suck up petroleum? We'll see. I'm dubious.

6. Actually, Toyota sold electric cars here about the same time frame

of the EV1. Since they weren't quite as nasty as GM in getting them out of the hands of the public and crushing them, they are under the radar, so to speak, but still highly desirable, and going for $50K when you can find one. Google up "RAV4 EV" for more than you ever want to know on them. There's also some companies converting Priuses to plug in operation and adding bigger battery packs to them.

this car gets 250 miles between charges, and does 0-60 in 4 sec.

The timing was just wrong this year to pull the plug on large SUVs, Belzowski said, given the investment GM has in that segment.

That includes $175 million to retool the Janesville factory and a $160 million investment at Janesville's sister SUV plant in Arlington, Texas.

There's a key reason GM doesn't want to abandon big SUVs: thousands of dollars in profit for each vehicle.

GM dominates the market, selling three out of every five big SUVs.

"When you have something as good as the full-size utilities and they've given a very, very large part of your profit, that's good news but it also gives you vulnerability," GM design leader Robert Lutz said during a recent GM Webcast.

"We love that profitability but we can't grow dependent on it because who knows how long that party is going to last?"

12. To add one thing about the efficacy of EVs -

What about those living in apartments? If I live on the fifth floor of a highrise, how will I be able to charge my car? I couldn't exactly hang an extension cord out of my window...unless they had charging stations that would quickly charge it up.
