BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union has a vital leadership role to play in fighting climate change, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore said on Wednesday on the eve of an EU summit set to adopt new targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions. "I'm trying to get my country to change its policies, but in the meantime the European Union is absolutely key to helping the world make the change it must," Gore told reporters after addressing a conference on biofuels.
EU leaders meeting on Thursday and Friday are expected to commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming by 20 percent by 2020 compared to 1990 levels and 30 percent if other industrialized and emerging nations join in. Those targets will form the basis of the EU's negotiating position for an international agreement to extend the Kyoto Protocol on climate change past 2012.
Gore's film on global warming, "An Inconvenient Truth," won an Oscar for best documentary and the British government announced it will distribute the film to all secondary schools in England as part of an information pack. The European Union produces about 14 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions while the United States, the world's largest polluter, produces some 25 percent.
This is the Conference Mr. Gore is the keynote speaker for. How happy and grateful I am that he is our Environmental Ambassador to the world!

BRUSSELS, February 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The EC Commission's recent recommendation for minimum national Biofuels targets of 10% by 2020, has confirmed that the World Biofuels Market Congress could not come at a more fitting time or place. The reality can no longer be ignored; biofuels will play a key role in alleviating the growing threat of climate change, help hedge against high oil prices and diversify the energy supply.
Europe's largest Biofuels networking event with over 1000 attendees expected will take place at the Brussels Expo (March 7th-8th). Fresh from the Oscar winner's podium we are delighted to present Al Gore as a keynote speaker alongside a line up of 160+ board level speakers. With over 900+ high level executives having already confirmed their attendance and over 55 exhibiting companies, this is the 'must attend' event in the biofuels calendar.
Biodiesel and bioethanol plants are spreading at an incredibly rate all across the globe and congress attendees will represent nearly 50 countries. Governments from Asia to America are grappling with climate change, high oil prices and security of supply concerns and home grown biofuels will provide them with an excellent solution to boost their GDP, reduce their energy dependency and help develop their own new biotech industry.
Biofuels technologies are also developing rapidly as venture capital funds realise the potential of 2nd and 3rd generation technologies and the wider opportunities for biorefineries, biochemicals and bioplastic industrial ecosystems. Please visit www.worldbiofuelsmarkets.com for more details.
