Former lawmaker pleads guilty to killing gosslings with gas grill

JACKSON, Mississippi, July 11, 2008 (NBC) -- Former Republican Mississippi State Senator Mike Gunn has entered guilty pleas to charges he took young Canadian geese from their habitat and killed them in his gas grill.

On Wednesday he was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine, serve one year of probation and perform 80 hours of unspecified community service.

Gunn was seen taking the geese April 25th by neighbor Carol Boland. Boland said her attention was drawn to Gunn when she saw adult geese attacking him, trying to save their young.

She said he put the goslings in a gas grill and when that didn't kill them, he beat them to death.
Gunn told authorities he fed the geese to his dog.

After Gunn pleaded guilty in federal court he joked about the episode.
"I ran a foul of the law, and laid a huge egg and have received a gaggle of problems as a result, I am just glad this wild goose chase is behind us now," Gunn joked as he left court.

Jim Walker, spokesman for Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the agency that first investigated the incident, said he was pleased with the sentence.>>snip

That said, he may have been driven crazy by stepping in great green gobs of goose shit. We have those geese all over the place around here. They will take up residence at a pond or lake and literally carpet the surrounding area with their goose goobers. They are slippery and nasty as hell. I've seen flocks of thirty or forty birds around ponds next to homes. The adults are big birds and can get very aggressive especially when they have goslings around OR if there are Republican assholes in the vicinity.

I know it sounds weird to suggest that these big beautiful birds can be a major nuisance, but it is true. Especially if you enjoy walking around your pond or if you have small kids who are no match for a cranky Canada.

People have tried all kinds of ways of getting rid of them but the birds are persistent and they tend to come back to a spot year after year if they take a shine to it.

If it's not hunting season there's very little you can do to get rid of the geese. And even during hunting season you're shit out of luck, so to speak, since there's a limit on those big tasty rascals.

No doubt my comments will draw the ire of some who see it as a defense of the Republican dickhead who was killing those goslings. Just to let you know, my wife and I had three white China geese that we raised after she incubated them in an incubator. They were like family. Very social and would even come in the house and make themselves at home (green gobs and all) if you left a door open. They were also very protective and wouldn't let anybody but us walk around the yard unchallenged. They are very hard peckers and will draw blood if they get hold of you. Not to mention that they use their wings and feet when they attack.

Sad to say, they all eventually succumbed to attacks by wild critters (one died of snake bite while sitting on her eggs). We've thought about getting some more of them but they make so much noise that they can be obnoxious that way too. But they are good watchgeese.
