Mr Bush's speech is likely to deepen sectarianism in Iraq by identifying the Shia militias with Iran. In fact, the most powerful Shia militia, the Mehdi Army, is traditionally anti-Iranian. It is the Badr Organisation, now co-operating with US forces, which was formed and trained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. In the Arab world as a whole, Mr Bush seems to be trying to rally the Sunni states of Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan to support him in Iraq by exaggerating the Iranian threat.

2. He left out a lot of stuff

like the fact that Iran fought an eight year war against Iraq and certainly doesn't want to repeat the experience, nor are they particularly motivated to help the Iraqi Shi'a.

The region is still very tribal as well as sectarian, so "help" from either Iran or Saudi Arabia won't be particularly welcome. Add to that the fact that Iran is Farsi, not Arab, a completely different ethnic group.

But Stupid is stupid, and only recently learned there were two mutually hostile Islamic sects in Iraq, so he can think of nothing but how all other members of the two sects would probably rush in to help their brothers.

Iran has had troops massed on the border with Iraq ever since the invasion. They have shown amazing restraint for a bunch of mad dog fanatics (sarcasm).

I just hope there are enough cooler heads left in the Pentagon to block Stupid's attempt to start another war he has no chance of finishing with anything but defeat and bankruptcy.
