Why it's safe to parody Obama and NOT McCain

gnarled, scarred face....cancer...not funny
weird , halting walk...torture..not funny

adulterer?..hard to capture in a caricature
cozy with lobbyists?..even harder to capture

pill-popping/stealing ,skinny blonde wife with iris-less eyes, not at all easy to caricature...and she's said that it was an "illness"

exotic, interesting looking faces..he's got those big ears..he's tall & skinny..she's curvy and very attractive..his name lends itself to Islamic tie-ins..complete with costumes..

He's new, and any adverse reaction from him or his camp, can be dismissed the same way dems get chastised when they complain about being called democRAT.. "Why so touchy..it's just a JOKE!!"..:puke:

5. An honest answer.

The New Yorker's satire wasn't about Obama. It was a satire of the RW smears against Obama. The images of Obama in Muslim garb, and Michelle as a militant were easy to parody because (as they usually are) the RW smears are such blatant and ridiculous lies.

A analogous smear of McCain would be very difficult to come up with. For one, we haven't created any blatant or easily disproved smears of McCain. For two, there aren't any well known internet or email smears of McCain circulating, as there are for Obama.

Any of McCain's characteristic you listed above wouldn't count as satire. It would simply be distasteful.

The New Yorker's satirical images of Obama as a Muslim and Michelle as a militant weren't created by them out of whole cloth. They were depictions of the racist, bigoted, and xenophobic smears being spread about the Obamas by RWers.

Call it post-modernism, or shitty satire, etc. It doesn't make the New Yorker's intention racist.
