Bush 'sad' for convicted former aide

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush on Wednesday said he was "sad" about the conviction of a former top White House aide on the "serious" charges of perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

"On a personal note, I was sad. I was sad for a man who had worked in my administration, and particularly sad for his family," Bush told CNN en Espanol in his first public comments on Lewis "Scooter" Libby's guilty verdict.

"This was a lengthy trial on a serious matter, and a jury of his peers convicted him. And we've got to respect that conviction," Bush said one day after a jury convicted Vice President Dick Cheney's former right-hand man.

The US president also sought to preempt further questions on the matter, which is closely tied to the flawed case for going to war in Iraq, by noting that it was "an ongoing legal matter."

In 2005, then-Bush spokesman Scott McClellan chalked up Bush's inconsistent approach to different ongoing legal fights to "presidential prerogative."
